The manual hand grinder market has seen an extraordinary evolution in the past 15 years, largely spurred by the rise of portable brewing methods like the AeroPress. Long before brands like Made by Knock became known entities in specialty coffee circles, the Porlex Mini was shaping what would become a new vibrant and competitive niche. Introduced around 2012, the Porlex Mini was notable for its ability to fit inside the AeroPress plunger tube, a feature that revolutionized portable brewing by marrying compact grinding and brewing in a single travel kit.

Fast forward to today, and dozens of high-end manual grinders have emerged to serve everything from Turkish-style powder to espresso and pour over grinds, reflecting the diverse preferences of coffee lovers on the go. Among these contenders, Made by Knock stands out for their meticulous Scottish craftsmanship and thoughtful product development.

Founded in 2010, Knock started with wood-based accessories before introducing their first grinder, the Hausgrind, in 2014, entering the market around the same time as Comandante. The Hausgrind was one of the first manual grinders to feature hardened steel burrs, wrapped in a beautifully crafted wooden body that would influence other designs across the industry.

Their follow-up, the Feldgrind, transitioned to a nearly all-metal construction and introduced top-of-grinder grind adjustment, a convenient and elegant solution to a common usability hurdle. But it was the Aergrind, launched via Kickstarter in 2017, that cemented Made by Knock’s reputation.

Combining a sleek tube form factor designed specifically to fit inside the AeroPress, with a robust 38mm conical burr set made by Italmill and a stepless grind adjustment, the Aergrind struck a balance of portability, durability, and performance that few rivals could match.

Yet no product is without room for improvement. Early Aergrind owners reported issues such as the friction-fit grinds catch bin occasionally detaching and challenges with the grind setting slipping under heavy grinding load. In response, the 2022 Aergrind revision addressed these concerns with stronger components, enhanced burrs that promised four times the lifespan, and refined ergonomics, elevating an already impressive grinder to new heights.

This review will dive deeply into the Aergrind’s out-of-the-box experience, its performance across brew methods, and how it stacks up against popular manual grinders in today’s market.
