Pouring out the coffee is slow at first because when it's full, very little air is coming into the brewer which slows down the pour When new, the rubber gasket smells strong Some people have a hard time pulling the plunger up when done brewing. There's a trick to it...
This is by far my favorite coffee press basically because it allows me to pour a cup and I can come back later and have another cup and since the grinds have been pulled out of the coffee, I don't have to worry about over-brewing the coffee. I have the 32 oz and 24 oz models.
-Use a coarse grind just like I would any other press pot. -Then insert the basket about an inch into the pot to pour the coffee so that you don't spill too much on your counter. -Gently push the plunger all the way down then pour your water onto the grinds. -At about half way full, move the plunger up and down gently to allow the trapped air at the bottom to escape. Don't move the plunger to vigorously or you'll spill the coffee -Once the pot is full, bring the plunger up most of the way and then push it gently down in order to stir the grinds. -At about half way through the brewing process, I like stirring the coffee again by bringing the plunger up and pushing it back down again. -Once your done, gently pull the plunger up. **This is where the genius of the Tirra reveals itself. Once you've pulled the plunger all the way to the top, the basket snaps into the lid and releases from the plunger which is pushed back down into the pot. That way the handle doesn't stick out of the top. **Also, if you have trouble pulling the plunger up I like to use a 2 steps forward, when step back approach. By pulling the plunger up until it becomes very hard to go any further and then quickly pushing it back down a little bit, it stirs up the ground coffee, clears the filter and allows the liquid to pass through the filter making it much easier to pull the plunger up. Do this a few times and your basked will snap into place at the top very quickly. If you still find you have a hard time bringing the plunger up, your grinder might be producing too much fines. If that's the case, look into upgrading your grinder. You'll find tons of info about fines and sludge in the cup if you search the forums.
Now if the fact that the first half cup of coffee takes a very long time to pour out of the Tirra because of lack of air flow, you can take the basket out, rinse the grinds out and place it back on top. The coffee will then pour out very quickly.
