-Great value. -Aesthetically pleasant. -Easy to use. -Not too loud. -Lightweight. -Love that fresh grind smell!
Negative Product Points
-Very lightweight. I'm not sure if that's a negative point or not. I normally place my hand on top during the grinding process, but that is hardly necessary. One could easily knock it off the table. -Messy. Grinds are all over my table. -Static cling leaves grinds stuck to the sides of the collection compartment.
Detailed Commentary
I use the Solis Maestro to grind coffee for my French press, thus I've only tested the coarse grind setting. I cannot say whether or not it produces a perfect grind for espresso. I use it with mostly Kona coffee (Hawaii is my home so I get it dirt cheap when I visit!) and Peet's. I definitely get more flavor with the grinder and French press than with pre-grinds and drip.
My ratings are based on previous editor and user reviews mixed with my own inexperienced opinion. I gave this device high marks for value, costing me only $80 from Costco.com. The machine isn't too loud and grinds at a good speed. It is extremely simple to use: just turn the dial to the desired grind and turn it on.
The aesthetics are alright. I've definitely seen worse, even with higher-end models. It is pleasant to look at, but hardly revolutionary in design. It doesn't make any statements, but perhaps that is a statement in itself.
Buying Experience
I'm very new to grinders. I did most (if not all) of my research at this site. My primary goal was balancing quality with price. I found this grinder to be of excellent value given the previous reviews and prices paid. At the time of this writing, Costco.com is offering a $10 discount on the $79.99 price.
Were I a wealthier man, I would probably buy a more high-end burr grinder.
Three Month Followup
It's been a bit longer than 3 months. I still like the machine for the price. I am noticing the static cling and the mess (a lot of mess) of ground beans on my counter. It's not a huge deal. I don't think the noise is a huge issue, as it's not that loud and only on for a short time. Grinds aren't as consistent as I'm assuming they should be.
