Detailed Commentary
The upgrade bug have begun when I have changed my Expobar Brewtus II to a La Marzocco GS/3.
My upgrade path in the las 20 years was : Gaggia MDF Doser, Rancilio Rocky Doser, Mazzer Mini Doser, Mazzer Mini Doserless E. I have found I really prefer doserless grinder.
My choice was very narrow because I want a doserless grinder who fit under my 16.5 inches cabinet. The only grinders in the short list was the Mahlkonig Pro M and the Versalab. The Versalab was too much manual grinder for me. The Mahlkonig was the only option. When loolking for the Mahlkonig Pro M, I have seen the Vario K30 for a bit more. I have read a lot of good comments about the K30 Vario and wonder if I can find a way to put it under my cabinet. I have search for the total hight of the K30 Vario with the short hooper but was to high by almost an inche. I have asked if someone have a solution in Coffeegeek Espresso Grinder Forum. JonR have said to me he cut the hooper and fit a Mazzer lid on it. YES !!! That was the way to go.
I have decide to buy the K30 Vario and live with a cut hopper and dont regret my choice. The cut hopper hold around half a pound of coffee. At this time, I have used the grinder for around 1100 espresso shots with several types of coffee. For clumping, I have had not seen this problem. The consistence of the grind is fabulous. This machine is really fast and silent too. The adjustement of the grind and timer is a breeze. As state in negative point, the adjustment of timer by the knob is to much sensitive. But I can live easily with it.
From the Mazzer Mini E, the upgrade was a nice one…not a huge one. The grinder is much more silent, the timer on the Mahlkonig is efficient compare to the adjustment of the Mazzer and the grind much more fluffy. I have seen a difference of around 2 grams in a 18 grams basket at the same level between the 2 grinders. In the cup, I have found some flavour more apparent, a darker espresso and much more mouth feel.
Buying Experience
I usually prefer buying Canadian because I am in Canada but with a price difference of a 500 $ at time of puchasing (including shipping taxes and custom fees) sorry but it was a too big bite in the wallet for buying in the country. I have bought this grinder from Chris Coffee. It was my first experience with this seller. A very smooth one. Highly recommanded
I am a french speaking and make my best for an english review. Thanks for understanding.
