Similar Items Owned: Cimbali Junior, Rancilo Rocky
Bottom Line: I would have matched my Junior against any flat burr home/ light commercial machine and am confident it would have held its own.  The Max is a clear step up from there.
Positive Product Points

Remarkable improvement in my shots.  Easy to make very fine adjustments in your grind.

Negative Product Points

Large adjustments in your grind would take some time.

Detailed Commentary

Simply put, this is an extraordinary grinder.  Having owned a Cimbali Junior/Cadet for several years, I wondered about the Max and its conical/flat burr mix.  Got a used original Max and found it made a notable difference in my shots.   Please note that my grinder is an original Max, not a Max Junior Hybrid.  It is 18" tall due to the height of the hopper, and has the burr adjustment knob on the right side, not the front as in the Junior Hybrid.  I believe this offers an ergonomic advantage for adjusting the grind.  I've also compared the flat burrs from my Max with the burrs from my Cadet and found that they have different patterns.  I note this because many vendors selling replacement burrs state that the burrs are identical.  They clearly are not.  I do not know if they fit both machines, but the pattern of cutting surfaces are clearly different.
I have not replaced my Max' burrs, though I have pulled off the carrier to inspect them up close and personal.  While there is no noticeable damage to them, they do not have the razor sharpness of the Junior's, because the Juniors were replaced when I got my machine and I only pull a few shots per day.  I do not see any reason to change any of the burrs because of the consistently excellent quality of the shots as is.  Besides, the conical ones are supposed to last forever.
One advantage of the Max over the Junior Max Hybrid is the ergonomics of having the grind adjustment knob on the right side instead of in front.  The side mount is easier to spin (unless you're a leftie).
Fit and functionality are excellent.  Even with the taller hopper that comes on an original Max (unlike the Max/Junior hybrid from Chris' Coffee), it still fits under my upper kitchen cabinets (just barely).  I have no problem with the sound or speed, and I find that the "Thwacker" (the doser) works quite well.  It is so-named by my three year old son, who operates it daily and who thinks that making coffee with daddy is the very best way to start each day.  Sometimes I consider removing the grinds flap that sits in the doser, so that I can sweep any grinds that collect between the burrs and the doser.  Haven't done so yet, but thinking about it.

Buying Experience

N/A - from a private party

Three Month Followup

Wouldn't change a thing.

One Year Followup

I ran across a dealer with a brand new Max and could not resist. Bought it in May 2014.  Great grinders.
