My review may seem to some unnecessarily harsh. However, once you have experienced different levels of coffee equipment and how it affects flavor my review will seem kind--or at least not unnecessarily harsh. If I were writing the review at the time I originally purchased the grinder, I would have given it a more favorable, but not good, review. However, I am writhing this review after having experienced many different levels of espresso machines, coffee makers, and grinders. For espresso I began with a Braun Bravo Steam Espresso machine (moka maker really-$40), Saeco Via Veneto ($199), Pasquini Livia 90 ($1350), and now an Olympia Cremina ($2500). For grinders I began with a Krups blade grinder ($20), Capresso 551 ($50), Kitchen Aid A-9 ($130), Gaggia MDF ($200), and now and Anfim Best ($400). I also use a Hario Deco Vacuum Pot, French Press, Stove top espresso (MOKA), Turkish Coffee Pot, and a Neapolitan Coffee Pot. So, I can look back with considerable experience as to the difference in grind quality and how it affects coffee quality.
This is reallllly simple. The coffee grinder is the most important equipment purchase you can make. It is/can be even more important the the coffee brewing device. Bottom line, if you value the flavor of coffee "DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY." Save up and purchase an appropreate level of burr grinder for the style of coffee you are brewing. Drip is the least demanding so you can scrape by with a $50 Capresso 551. It is still a crappy grinder, and you will have weak bitter coffee. If you do not want to scrape by you will need to spend at least $100 for drip Vacuum Pot, French Press. You will need to spend at least $150 for a bottom of the line espresso grinder. If you are lucky you may find last years model Solis Maestro for $109 or Plus for $150. However, be preparied to tear it down and clean it after every pound of coffee if using for espresso. A decent espresso grinder (LUX, Isomac Grand Maccinino) runs about $180 and still has plastic burr holders, a good one (Gaggia MDF) is $220 (brass burr holders), a real good one (Rancillio Rocky) is$285+ , and a great one (Pasquini Moka/Anfim Haus, Anfim Best, Mazzer Mini) is $400-$500. Remember, I am only referring to grinders for home use. Professional grinders cost a lot more. A bottom of the line professional grinder might start out at $500. You may find this hard to believe but you will get better tasting coffee from a $20 drip coffee machine and a $100 grinder than you will from a $100 drip coffee machine and a $20 grinder; or, a $300 grinder and a $150 espresso machine than a $1500 espresso machine and a $50-$100 grinder.
I gave my Krups blade grinder away with my Krups steam espresso (should be called a Moka Maker) to a friend of the family that reused her coffee grounds several times before throwing them away. I think that she was a perfect match for this setup.
The effect of my upgrades: After my Krups (yuck) I purchased a Capresso 551 and a Saeco ViaVeneto espresso machine. Now my espresso was beginning to taste good. I purchased a DeLonge burr grinder and quickly took it back as this was a terrible step in the wrong direction. I then purchased a KitchenAid A-9 for $130 about a year later. My coffee tasted ten times better and was twice as strong. I could now get the strength that I was getting in a double shot using a single shot with almost no bitterness. My Vacuum pot coffee was incredible. About a month later I purchased a Pasquini Livia-90 espresso machine. I had to replace my KitchenAid A-9 because it could not grind fine enough. I purchased a Gaggia MDF for $150 and was in coffee heaven. I also have a Solis Maestro $150 and it grinds almost as good as my MDF. I made some coffee in my Saeco ViaVeneto using my MDF. The coffee that came out of my little $200 machine was so good that I do not think I would have thought it necessary to upgrade to my $1200 Pasquini. Although, now that I have made coffee with my Pasquini I thought that you would have to pry it out of my cold dead hands. Well it did not work out that way. I have since upgraded to an Olympia Cremina lever operated espresso machine and an Anfim Best Grinder. The nectar that comes out of this combo is incredible.
In every instance I got the most flavor improvement from upgrading my grinders than from upgrading espresso machines. Believe me, upgrading grinders is much cheaper than upgrading espresso machines and will give you the most results for your money.
