good grinder except for espresso and turkish drinkers
Positive Product Points
This grinder is small and nice nice looking (for plastic). A definite step above the common "whirlygig" grinder. For light to medium home use.
Good instruction booklet. They answered a support question I sent. Easy to take apart and clean-which is necessary periodically (see the manual).
Negative Product Points
This is for drip or french press. Not for espresso or turkish. Has some static problems, but nothing extreme. Fairly noisy.
I bought this as a step up from a typical department store type grinder, with the hope that it could: improve the flavor of drip; do the job for a moka pot; and make some kind of passable job for espresso, until I saved for a "real" grinder.
The verdict: it is fine for drip, french press, and even a moka pot. A big improvement over the propeller type grinders. Grind is fairly even and not burnt. Definitely helped the quality of drip vs. its predecessor.
However, in spite of what it says in the manual, don't even think of using it in an espresso (pump) machine. Even on the finest setting the coffee will gush through your portafilter. The machine just can't grind fine enough. As a corollary, forget about using it to grind for Turkish.
On the good side, the machine is user friendly. Controls are easy to use and well laid out, and you can see everything that is going on during the grind. The doser is not accurate but is fairly consistent (it's actually more of a timer) , and using it means you can press the button and walk away if you want a relatively small amount of coffee. The dial claims to have a "12 cup" setting, but I think it is more like the amount necessary for 3-4 cups of good coffee.
One note of warning: READ THE MANUAL!!! When taken out of the box the burr settings have to be calibrated, and you can ruin the grinder if you run it before you set it up properly. That said, the instructions are clear and easy to follow. Just read them!
