Detailed Commentary
I'm a full city roaster, so this machine meets 90% of my needs. The only time I go for a darker roast is when I grind for espresso, and I am convinced that this machine would give up the ghost quickly if you put any appreciable volume of dark roasts through it at fine grinds.
This unit, an older model, came with the VERY flimsy fins on the adjustment collar that simply snapped off. I managed to find Baratza on line and called their 800 number. They shipped me a free replacement collar with much better fins. I needed to carve out the hopper openings to accommodate the wider fins, but a utility knife proved to be adequate to the task.
For my use, this machine is sufficient, although the rotary dial does occasionally fail to start the grinder, and I have to press the pulse switch a few times or even unplug it to get the rotary to work again.
Aside from this, the grind quality is consistent, widely variable by setting, and easy to measure using the rotary dial.
