This machine produces a hot, full-flavored cup of coffee, and it does it with European style. Buy a Baratza Solis Maestro Plus, and your drip coffee world will be close to perfect.
Positive Product Points
One of only two coffee makers approved by the SCAA. Very hot water due to a 1400 Watt heating element. All of this produces a very hot, tasty cup of coffee.
I like having a clear reservoir to see how much water is going to be brewed, unlike some of the Bunn models.
Although the water is not kept hot for instant brewing, it gets up to temp very quickly, and begins brewing within about 30 seconds. A full pot takes about 7-10 minutes, which is very reasonable considering the quality of coffee produced.
Attractive European styling. I bought the black unit, and it looks great next to my Baratza Solis Maestro Plus.
Negative Product Points
Akward removable covers for water reservoir and filter holder. I understand why we need covers; keep out dust and keep in heat and moisture. There is a problem, especially with the filter cover. The inside top collects condensation. When it is removed and replaced for the next pot of coffee, it makes a mess of water. A simple solution would be to have a slide in filter holder, with a permanent attached cover similar to just about any other coffee maker (Braun, Bunn, etc,). As for the water reservoir it would be nice if the cover was attached somehow (hinged or sliding). Having all of these separate pieces just seems to complicate the coffee-making process.
Poor water pattern (or lack of), easily solved by ordering a multi-hole water pipe from Boyds at a reasonable $7 US.
Carafe does not pour well, and has below average heat retention (even when pre-heated). Lid must be off to brew or store carafe with main unit. Others have recommended a Nissan carafe that will fit, and of course Nissan make great carafes, so this could be a solution.
Strange platform that sits under the carafe, does not stay attached, and seems to serve very little purpose.
Detailed Commentary
I bought a Bunn BT10-B, and it was very good. After reading all of the reviews on the Technivorm, I had to buy one to try out. I can say that it produces a better cup of coffee. More importantly, the annoyances that I had with the Bunn were solved, namely water reservoir level mystery and grounds overflow.
Although I listed many negatives for the Technivorm, I still gave an overall rating of 9. Most of the negative points are minor, and can be resolved easily. I am very picky, but maybe my little complaints will help other picky consumers. After all, when spending $200 on a home coffee maker, you deserve a great product. I think Technivorm delivers. With a few minor adjustments, they would deserve a "10".
Buying Experience
Boyds is really great. Free filters and a pound of coffee to boot. Arrived in great shape and in a timely manner. Free shipping too! Great communication via phone by the friendly people at Boyds when there was a shipping descrepancy. A+ Rating!
