Positive Product Points
After using this machine daily for the past 3 months and it being my first machine I am plesantly surprised. It is very easy to use. The results beat Starbucks or Tully's easily.
Negative Product Points
As the looks go of this machine, well, its not much . It is a lot of plastic.
Detailed Commentary
As a novice I decided to venture forth with a superautomatic and see if I could master it, thinking later I might spring for a Sylvia/Rocky once I had a few basic skills down.
I read everything in the library on espresso making, everything on this site, watched a great video and then bought this Spidem Trevi Silver. I selected the Spidem over a Saeco (even though the look like twins)based on the owner of one of the stores that advertises on this site's recommendation. He said that historically the Spidem brand is more reliable.
I received the machine barely used but with no manual. I then downloaded the Saeco manual from their site and that was some help.
With very little trouble at all on first use I produced a decent latte. Using beans from Vivace in Seattle roasted 2 days prior, the crema looked rich and lush. Althought it took me some practice on where to use the tip in the frothing pitcher I had no problem having plenty of steam to produce microfoam for myself and friends over the holidays.
I have the settings dialed in to a double shot. To produce the best cup I work quickly from the minute the coffee is down to push the steam button & within 20 seconds I am set to steam, bleed out a small amount of water and then place my cold pitcher with cold milk to steam. With the tip just below the surface I am able to get a good amount of microfoam then plunge the nozzle down deeper and just a few swirls and I'm ready to "slam" the pitcher on the counter thrice and pour. Yumm...
No fuss, no mess, this machine holds plenty of water, grinds, tamps, brews, steams and dumps with ease. I am using it twice daily now without a hitch.
Now with a lot more practice, I can decorate my latte with a swell looking heart! I have dropped the idea of buying any other machine later on.
Tip: I think for me it is essential to preheat your cup with hot water.
Buying Experience
After days and days of research and agonizing I found a slightly used machine on Ebay and it turned out to be a local person so we drove over and picked it up paying zero for shipping.
