I would pass on this machine until Cuisinart resolves problems with the steam wand.
Positive Product Points
It heated up v. quickly in the morning. Operation and buttons were all simple. It made great-tasting crema, quickly, with twin faucets for doubles. Was relatively quiet once we got used to the pulsing pump sound. It made good foam, quickly. Easy to check water level and refill from the back. Nice-looking. Small countertop footprint.
Negative Product Points
The steam wand was a toughie to clean. It was also awkwardly placed and long. It was difficult to extricate the milk carafe from under the wand without spilling. Despite following the instructions meticulously, making foam was a mystifyingly off-and-on success. The entire steam wand suddenly fell off while being cleaned and could not be screwed back in again. We subsequently read online that this had happened to several other users.
Detailed Commentary
The steam wand was a toughie to keep clean. It was also awkwardly long which made it hard to extricate the milk carafe out from under without spilling contents. A metal sleeve on the wand had to be removed for cleaning. The baked-on milk on the shaft underneath had to be gently scraped off with a spoon every couple of days. Boring.
The entire wand arm suddenly fell off while being cleaned and could not be screwed back in again. When we took the housing off to allow room to rotate the wand freely in order to screw it back in (which didn't work) the reassembled housing then could not be tightened up sufficiently to prevent leaking. It was clearly not meant for home repair efforts. The whole machine thus became defunct in little over a year of gentle daily use.
Buying Experience
We bought the machine at a Canadian Tire store. Simple almost self-serve procedure.
Three Month Followup
The steam wand was not repairable. We threw the machine away since it was no longer usable for our purpose (making capuccinos.) A waste of money and a burden on landfill. We've replaced it with an another brand of espresso-maker which is fast and problem-free, if marginally less attractive on the counter.
