Detailed Commentary
I was shopping for something better than my Silvia in the $2,000 price range. No one talks about Nuova Simonelli much or the Musica so checked it out. I think the Oscar may be a very nice machine people don't talk about too. To me the machines in it's class are all E61 group head machines if I got the name right. After that they all look to be about the same and look like they came from the same place and are all i see and read about. The Nuova Simonelli Musica (Lux) stands out as a pro's machine I could afford. It stands out in the way it looks. The group head and machine uses technology that Nuova Simonelli has developed and proven works. Watching a seatle coffee gear video "Gail" compares it with another machine both her and and the other girl are surprised how much more flavor it produced. Nuova Simonelli has been the machine used at the world barista championships. I found a video of a world champ (Gwen?) using the Musica on a morning talk show to demo his art work. The steam wand is what is used by baristas in the world championships. I wanted this machine to better my ability. it lists for $3500 but I see it around $2500 and was lucky to find a demo. The machine rocks. It is faster then me. I can pull a shot and steam the milk together in about 30 seconds. I have never had milk stretch so nice as I have had with this machine and I am still am new to it. I see people getting perfect looking art from it and feel i am getting closer. I have gotten Wow. The volumetric dosing is nice. I can use the single dose as a temp surf as i walk away to get milk or flush the group head after a dose. I can use it or the double so I can pay attention to my milk if I see the need to cut it short I can. Volumetric is a nice way to judge my grind and tamp. Since the machine is putting out a consistant volume my time is an indication of tamp and grind so if I can adjust and make real easy observations. I would say Nuova Simonelli make pretty boxy unsexy looking machines that may be the best around but the Musica Lux is also sexy. https://twitter.com/Koifla/sta tus/269253370332708866/photo/1 https://twitter.com/Koifla/status/269253370332708866/photo/1
Buying Experience
Buying a big ticket item on ebay is a little nerve wracking but you are trying o get a deal. Also there are not very many Musica Lux models to find. One dealer wanted to trade off ebay and that was real scary. But Barista lab shipped faster than anyone has ever shipped anything to me and the unit for being a demo was perfect. I suspect it is new except the sn has it as a 2010 and a 1500 watt where it is listed as a 1200. The program was locked so I could not change the dosing to where I wanted it. I contacted Nuova Simomelli to register the waranty and ask for help getting past program block and they were super nice and helped right away.
Three Month Followup
Nice machine easy to use. Had program lock on when I got it but tech support helped me basicly do what was in the owners manual. It does everything well, looks great and recovers fast. The important thing is my espresso and steam is great. My art pours are better. It has a few quirks like the hot water always sucks air. Maybe I don't use it enough but when I want to warm cups it tends to spit the first one.
