If you're looking for a dual-boiler, PID-controlled machine with an E61 group you should give Alex serious consideration.
Positive Product Points
Dual boiler, PID-controlled, E61-based machine. Consistent temperature, quiet operation, lots of steam, flexible configuration (plumb-in option, separate on/off switch for steam boiler).
Negative Product Points
No pre-infusion control (inherent in E61 group), no pressure profiling. Access to the tank is a bit cumbersome if you don't plumb (it's under the cup warming tray).
Detailed Commentary
The Alex Duetto II is a great machine. If you're looking for a dual-boiler, PID-controlled machine with an E61 group you should give Alex serious consideration. I've found operation over the last 6 months to be flawless.
After some experimentation, I've gotten to really appreciate the consistent nature of the solid E61 group and PID controller combination. I typically crank out 6-10 single shots in the morning and once I get my grinder set right (a Vario), the Alex produces beautiful results with ease. Consistency is important to me because my other machine is a La Pavoni Stradivari, which has some excellent features (and produces great results), but is all over the place in terms of temperature stability. Not so with the Alex.
Even with my limited latte art skills (I usually prefer straight espresso), I'm able to produce great micro-foam with the powerful steam arm, using the standard tip.
If I could vary the pre-infusion time and profile the pressure during the pull (as I can with my LP), this would be a perfect machine. Oh well, guess I'll have to wait until LM builds that single group Strada...
Buying Experience
Very good company to work with. Friendly, helpful pre-sales, delivered on time with no issues. I had one component failure (steam gauge) about 2 months after purchase, and service was prompt and professional.
