Positive Product Points

If it works, this is a great machine for its price point. A dual boiler machine is what I have been seeking. I really like the water and steam knobs on this machine - very easy to use and control. The small details are very nice, too - like the illuminated reservoir, the roomy drip tray with pop-up "empty me" sign, the hidden tool drawer, the heated group head, the toasty warm cup tray, the retractible third wheel for ease of moving the unit. Breville really paid attention to the details on this machine.

Negative Product Points

I received three (3) machines. None was able to get past 7 bar pressure. So, I was never able to pull a proper shot. I prefer the functional look of some of the other prosumer machines. The BES900XL is a little too "star trek" sleek looking for my taste (obviously, this is not a deal-breaker however).

Detailed Commentary

I REALLY wanted to like this machine. It has so much going for it. Supposedly, the later production models are reliable, but I was unable to get that far. I purchased a remanufactured unit. Unfortunately, it could not produce adequate pressure to pull a proper espresso. It would barely get past 7 bar. After trying several grind adjustments and several tamp pressures, I called Breville support to ask what I might be doing wrong. They were very supportive and had me load the back flush pad and hit the brew button. 7 bar max. They were very professional and personal and apologized and told me they would send out another. A few days later machine #2 arrived. To my dismay, same problem - no more than 7 bar. Called Breville again. Again they were very apologetic and offered me a full refund on the machine. I asked for a third replacement instead, which they were agreeable to. Machine #3 arrived.  Same problem - inadequate pressure. Sad but true. Unfortunately, Breville was unable to ship a RM machine from a later production run. At this point, I believe I will have to hold out for another manufacturers' prosumer machine.

Buying Experience

Except for not getting a working machine, the buying experience was fine. Breville provided very professional and personal service. The machines shipped quickly.

Three Month Followup

The fourth machine was the charm.  After three months I am happily having latte for breakfast every morning. The turn-on timer is a great time saver, preheating the water, group head and the portafilter. Everything works great. Thank you, Breville!
