The ball shaped tamper is not perfectly shaped for the hand. However the alternative shape is far more comfortable.
Detailed Commentary
This is a good value tamper to purchase instead of the cheap rubbish supplied with espresso machines or coffee grinders.
The company supply in a variety of materials, colours, shapes, and sizes. They are mass machined to a high quality.
Whilst there may be better tampers around, this is a good one to start with. I suspect it may be the only tamper one will need to buy.
The company offer so many variations these days. Firstly they will machine the tamper to 0.1mm precision for your hopper. Secondly the tamper part can come flat or curved. Thirdly you can choose from four materials (steel, aluminium, copper, brass). There is a choice of wood handle or metal handle. The wood handle can be long or short and ball or standard. The aluminium handle can be plain, powder coated, or anodised. A logo supplied on the top of the handle can be customised too. Finally, if you change your mind, all the parts are interchangable.

I don't use any more as I bought the wrong size. I note that the Reg Barber website allows you to customise your tamper to the nth degree:
two shapes of handle
two sizes of handle
two types of wood or aluminium handle
three shapes of tamper
three materials for tamper
tamper machined to a fraction of a milimeter.
Many different colours of aluminium handle.
If I wanted to I could replace the flat 49mm steel base with a surved 51.3mm brass base. They connect easily with a screw thread.
