Expensive, but worth it - this is a great evolution of a great manual brewing filter.
Positive Product Points
- good evolution of a very indie product - well constructed and very solid - much better filter than the V2 and V1 Kones - easy to clean
Negative Product Points
- doesn't fit all Chemex brewers - wish it worked in Hario V60s - it is expensive
The Kone V3 filter made me a fan again of manual pourover brewing. I don't like paper filters, so previously my go-to manual pourover was a Hario cloth filter brewer. I've got both the original Kone and the Kone V2, and while I liked them more than paper filters, I still found them tricky to brew with - I'd run into underextraction problems.
With the V3, I have much better brews overall. I like the fact that the hole pattern is graduated, so it's less dense near the top of the Kone, and more dense lower down. This controls the flow of the brew much better. Also, the holes are much finer, so the amount of solids that make it through to the cup are well controlled.
Cleaning the Kone is pretty easy - I tend to rinse it well right after brewing, but you also have the option of putting it in the dishwasher. Structurally, it is much stronger than the first two versions, and can handle a bit more "manhandling" while hand cleaning.
The price isn't cheap - $60 is a lot for what some people consider a pice of steel wrapped around and pierced with holes. The price is reflected in several things - the product is pretty much hand made; the company is very small so volumes are low; this filter uses a chemical photo etching process which is expensive; the product is hand welded. While I do think $60 is a lot (and listed it as a negative), it is what it is. It should last you years and years of use, so the RoI is pretty good.
Bought direct from Able Brewing. Very fast, very personal service.
