Everyone loves to talk about the Rancilio Rocky grinder, and for good reason - it's an excellent grinder. One thing you'll hear people talk about often is that the Rocky "has parts from Rancilio's commercial grinders inside!" That is true.

But did you ever stop to think about what the commercial grinder model is, and how much it costs?

That grinder everyone mentions is the Rancilio MD40 Commercial grinder. This is no home toy - it's a a full commercial grade grinder, built from the ground up to grind literally thousands of pounds of coffee. And while it's true the Rocky does borrow some parts from the MD40 (namely the motor), the commercial grinder leaves the Rocky in the dust when it comes to the rest of the machine.

The Rancilio MD40 coffee grinder has been around a while, but was only available from regional espresso equipment distributors until recently. After steady pressure on Rancilio North America, Aabree Coffee Company was able to convince them that the MD40 should offered to the general public, alongside of its smaller sibling, the Rancilio Rocky.

What makes the MD40 so good? It's all in the internals - metal, more metal, and then even more metal. Consider this: the MD40 has a cast aluminum dosing mechanism. This part will last. The MD40 has an aluminum portafilter fork, brass dosing lever, and a heavy duty all stainless steel housing.

Take one look at the 50mm burr set on the Rancilio MD40 and you know it was built for precision, and built for long durability. Tempered, hardened stele, cut to a precise tooth pattern that ensures longevity in wear, and accuracy in grind. And while they are very easy to replace (and replacement parts are readily available), you can count on years and years of service from these burrs in the home environment.

The fully adjustable doser is all metal with a sweeper for clearing off the grinds.

Burrs are easily user-servicable... as if you need to do it!

The MD40 is designed from the ground up to be an espresso grinder, and while it can do any grind with ease, this machine is at home when you're making espresso. The adjustable doser can be easily changed from 7 grams up to 9 grams per pull on the brass doser lever. Almost every portafilter on the market today will fit the dosing fork, which means the MD40 is a "universal" grinder. Even pressurized portafilters work well with the MD40.

The ground coffee-dosing hopper located on the front of the MD40 is made of metal and impact resistant tinted plastic that shows the contents of the hopper. The internal workings of the doser such as the swipes (the fins that push the ground coffee to the chute) and dosing lever are made of heavy aluminum.

The one-pound coffee bean hopper is made of impact resistant tinted plastic (which helps keep harmful light away from the beans) and features a type of  "shut off valve" that allows for removal of the bean hopper without emptying the coffee beans first. This kind of feature is fairly common in $400 grinders or more, but rarely found in grinders under this price.

For those who like the ability to fine-tune your grind adjustment, the MD40 has over 80 grind settings. And the MD40 has a built in (and removable) front tamper which has a unique feature: it's adjustable between 53mm and 56mm.

If you'd like to get in on owning one of the best grinders you can get for your home today, Aabree Coffee Company is offering the Rancilio MD40 for $395, which includes standard ground shipping, and no taxes.
