Subject: Bar Nine in Culver City w/ Mod Bar setup

I had a chance to try out Bar Nine today near my place of work. They're not fully open yet but are serving folks who drop by.

I was very impressed with their Mod Bar setup.   I had to admit I was a little skeptical given it doesn't look anything like an espresso machine.  I spoke to the barista a bit about it... I asked him if it was a saturated group and he said no.  The brew head has a built in heater.. Maybe thermocoil or something along that like, similar to the grouphead on a Breville BDB.  Anyway he pulled a shot for me and it was quite fast actually.   It looked like a 10 second shot.. But boy the shot was smooth and rich in crema.. Incredibly good.

I honestly was wowed by the coffee, more so than the machine.  It bested the coffee shops around my neighborhood  (Stumptown and Handsome).  Whatever they're doing with their roasts, they're doing it right.. They also made me a pourover. It also was very good.    I was so impressed I decided to picked up a bag on my way out.

Anyway these guys are going to be a hit.. It's out of the way but if the product is good (and it is), people will come.

Bar Nine has served me the best coffee I've had to date.    PS. They do things a little different over there.  No spoons with your espresso.  Lattes served up in jars.  Interesting juxposition of analog and high tech...

To be honest I would normally be turned off by such gimmickry but the product spoke for itself.  I can't not deny enjoying probably the best espresso I've had in a long while.
