I was passing through Fresno and had a chance to stop in at Cafe Corazon. It is really a small time roaster that sells drinks. Leo is a self taught roaster. He uses Diedrich IR-2.5TT and roasts right. His preference is standard flavors but also appreciates more acidic coffes as well. It looked like he had about 6 roasts at the time. He brews coffee in clever drippers using folded flat bottom standard coffee brewer filters. I would avoid espresso until he can upgrade his equipment (his grinder cannot be dialed in). He has good coffee knowledge and has passion for everything he does. He has started milling his own flour for his pastries. I'll go back when I'm in Fresno next time.
Yes, Leo is a very nice guy, and passionate about coffee. I buy about a pound of beans from him a week. It's been fun to sample the different varieties he gets. I mostly use them for brewed coffee, but his espresso blend isn't bad either.
Unfortunately, Iron Bird has now closed again, so that's no longer an option.
There is a new place in Clovis (a few miles east of Fresno) called Kuppa Joy, which looks quite promising. They seem very dedicated to making good coffee, and use beans from places like Verve and Victrola. I've only been there once, and got a good vibe. Unfortunately, the cappuccino I got had too much milk for my taste, more like an 8 ounce latte than a traditional cappuccino. I haven't had a chance to get back there, but I plan to visit it again sometime soon.
Just stopped into Leo's shop for a pound of beans. He tells me he's going to get an LM Fb-80 two group machine and Mazzer grinder soon. This should be a major upgrade for the cafe. Right now they're using a prosumer machine (actually it's my old Quickmill Anita) and a very beat up old stepped grinder. The new machine and grinder should help them get to the next level. Pretty cool.
