Have you had a lot of Ritual? I've been disappointed in their roasts lately, they taste under roasted. Highly acidic, confusing my taste buds with over extraction. There were good flavors underneath, but the acid was too much.

Less water, more grounds.

If I were in the Bay Area for 2 days, what places would be advisable to go to?

San Francisco

I recently drove up to San Francisco to try out a few coffee places there (and try and get a DIS*LOYALTY card punched).  I hit the following places:

Sight Glass Coffee Bar & Roasters and had an Owl's Howl espresso
Ritual Coffee Roasters and had a Hibernator espresso
Four Barrel Coffee Roasters and had a Friendo Blendo espresso
Mavelous and had a hand pour Tim Wendelboe Kenya Mugaga and a Stumptown Hairbender Espresso.

I enjoyed Sight Glass and could have spent more time there.  Right now they've got an espresso machine in a very small area while they are working on opening up the coffee bar inside.  There was little to no wait at Sight Glass and I had some time to talk to the Barista.  I enjoyed the Owl's Howl espresso and thought it was nice and spicy.  Would have been fun to have a hand pour there.

There was quite a line and crowd at Ritual and Four Barrel on Valencia and we didn't have the time to sit down and enjoy the espresso or interact with the baristas because of the crowd.  The Hibernator at Ritual was chocolate and spice and the Friendo Blendo was lemon peel and chocolate.  It was nice to try the Friendo Blendo in their shop for comparison to the shots I've been pulling at home and at work for calibration.

Our last stop, and probably my first stop next time I'm in San Francisco was Mavelous.  I had the Tim Wendelboe Kenya Mugaga as a hand pour to start.  This and the Coffee Collective coffees they offer are not generally available in the US, so it was a treat.  I'd had Tim Windelboe coffees at a cupping in SF (an Esmeralda) so I was eager to get another.  I enjoyed it, but I think I was getting a little burnt on caffeine and coffee and it was a little subtle after the coffees I'd had (I started my morning at home with some espresso shots too).  I finished with their house espresso as a macchiato which was the Stumptown Hairbender; I picked up nice black licorice flavors and was happy at how well it cut through the dollop of milk on top.  I picked up a bag for home.  The nice thing about Mavelous is the variety of coffees and methods (including vac pot) available.

So, for my SF trip, I'd recommend Mavelous (but check the hours first on the website or better still call) and Sight Glass.

Note:  I was finally able to get a DIS*LOYALTY card at our last stop, Mavelous, but the other roasters had either run out or they were too busy for us to ask.

Points South

If you're working your way South, here's a couple of places to try:

Barefoot Coffee Roasters in Santa Clara.  This is a good place to have coffee, but it looks like the company has recently been sold.  The Metro article stated that Andy Newbom will still be involved in coffee sourcing, though, but the Roll-Up and Barefoot Karma bars were closed.
Red Berry Coffee Bar across from City Hall in San Jose.  Small shop that has multiple roasters (Barefoot, Ecco, Ritual, and Verve.  They pull a good shot here and it's nice to be able to try different coffees.
Verve Coffee Roasters in Santa Cruz.  I try and swing by when I'm down in the area, much to the chagrin of my family.  Good espresso.

I'm sure others will chime in with their favorites, and the thread has some good recommendations.

This Ritual location opened about three months ago. Located in Hayes valley. Such a nice location, right next to a park. The weather was very nice with a pleasant breeze which enhanced the coffee consumption experience.

Hidden Cities seasonal espresso. Four coffees in the blend, three from Costa Rica. Sweet and fruity. Nice shot!

The Ritual container location is on the same street, and only one block, from the famous Blue Bottle kiosk on Linden street. I had this very nice Hayes Valley espresso.

I got to visit Sightglass coffee yesterday. In this view from the street you can see the fog burning off, turning cloudy skies into sunshine. The exact moment the fog burns off is unpredictable, but when it happens it makes for a magical moment which is just one thing that makes San Francisco so special.
