I went to the Naked lounge in Chico Ca. I'd heard alot good things about this place. So I went there. Definitely a 3rd wave coffee shop. All shots double ristretto as stated on the menu. I got a capp and the espresso was bitter! I was so dissapointed. The flavor wasn't anything special either. I went back today for a second drink and got a gibralter (around a 5 ounce capp) and found the same thing. It was the same Barista for both drinks so I'm wondering if she's just new or something. My friend assured me that he had so such experience.

Anybody try this place?

well by 3rd wave I just mean a high end specialty coffee shop. It was like going to Blue Bottle or Temple coffee in sac or Ritual coffee. They look like they really take their coffee serious.

i wouldn't call naked lounge espresso bitter, but i wouldn't call their shop quite 3rd wave either.  the one thing the do pretty well is their espresso.  the only serve one blend -- not s.o. espresso ever -- and it is a very traditional, chocolaty espresso roast.  super chocolaty but no fruit acidity what-so-ever -- maybe this is being confused with bitter.  however, their drip offerings (usually single origin) are roasted too dark, imo.  so as to 3rd wave, they're just the tip of the iceberg.

another shop in chico (if it's still around) is empire.  they're located by the railroad / chico state campus, in an actual vintage railroad car.  they've gone through at least one ownership change, but used to feature old soul roasters in sacramento.  like i said, they used to be a notch or two above naked, but i haven't been there in over a year.

I'll have to look for empire next time I'm there. As for the Naked Lounge, the espresso was definitely bitter. If its traditional espresso perhaps they're using robusta? I haven't been into espresso long enough to know what robusta tastes like, I haven't seen anybody advertise it.
