Thanks to the ever vigilant coffee geeks mentioning that the shots had a bitter finish I actually went to Roy;s this morning before my run and we dialed their machine in a bit. I figured that  a slight bitter finish was the result of too high temp.
Turns out they had changed the temperature up and it was set to brew at about 203 F. For the Boss that is too high and it results in a slight bitter paper note in the finish and a too bright lemony pop in the opening notes. So we dropped it 2.5 degrees to around 200.5 F and immediately the sweetness came back, the slight bitter finish went away and the berry, caramel and cocoa notes rounded out.

so thanks CoffeeGeeks for keeping us all on our toes!

Thanks to a mention by Tim, aka Espressophile, I stopped by while riding my bike around SJ, shooting pix for my photo class.

The double I had was nice as was the ham and cheese croissant. I know these don't mix but I was hungry and I wanted an espresso. An unexpected delight was the ambiance. It was nice to sit outside yet the traffic was not busy or bothersome.

Highly recommended.

Thanks for taking notice, Andy, and adjusting the temperature.  I will swing by Roy's again and have an espresso *and* a past(r)y!

I was at Roy's on April 26, had an espresso, and it was spot-on.  Very well made.  This was great considering they were slammed that day because of the festival.

(Sorry, I thought I had posted this earlier.)

I went by Roy's this morning for breakfast.  Spent $6 and got an espresso, a coffee, and a pork bun.

They weren't very busy, the espresso was tasty and so was the pork bun.  This is some place that I'll definitely return to.

I've been going by Roy's too regularly lately for their (espresso) macchiatos and pork buns.

It's nice to be able to get some good coffee without having to make a special trip to Barefoot.

I'm really pleased to hear that Roy's is doing well. I always praise Barefoot as being one of the best overall retail specialty coffee experiences I've had. (Gary H intro'd me to them a couple years back.) I recommend Andy's shop and crew to everyone I meet when we talk "best in the West." I'm impressed that they helped set up and continue to "mentor" Roy's. I'm going to be back in the SJ area next week, and will stop by. Ironically, I'm working on a WWII Japanese Internment Camp Memorial, and will probably be stopping in Japantown for that project, which will allow me to revisit Roy's. Last time I was there, the family was still working on the building, and looking to open within a couple weeks.
