Thanks again all for the advice... we're getting quite excited about the trip and will post our experiences here when we get back (or from the road). Unfortunately we won't be making it to the Seattle Coffee Fest - if I'd known about that when we booked the trip we might have flown into Seattle instead (going to visit relatives in Southern WA so it's about the same distance there from both Portland and Seattle) - but I'm sure that we'll have plenty of coffee experiences to keep us happy in Portland!

Good enough on visiting the relatives. Going up to the PNW is always fun for me. I love the area and having a coffee trade show over the weekend makes it even better. I'm sure you'll enjoy the coffee. Although, and jokingly, the worst cap I ever drank was from a drive through espresso operation somewhere South of Portland. Even in the birthplace region of US espresso there are a few, or maybe more, potential bad choices for coffee stops.
