I was at the Stumptown Annex location today, and overheard one of the owners talking with a young woman from Seattle. Turns out that Stumptown is planning to open a roasting facility and 2 cafés in Seattle. This seems to not be news, but I haven't seen CoffeeGeekers onto this...
there will be two retail locations. One will be at the (now former) location of Aurafice Internet Cafe at 616 E Pine Street. The other will be by the also-opening-soon Cafe Presse (Le Pichet's casual wine and coffee space serving Vita) on 12th.

It's going to be very interesting to see Seattle play out in the next year or so.
During my recent trips to Seattle, discussion about Stumptown coming up and setting up not only shop, but roasting had a wide variety of reactions. There was distain, indifference, welcome to competition, and some obvious and not so obvious fear.

That place saved my life! I was up at Yale and used to ride my bike down there (all over downtown and Capitol hill, but whatever) to get access to the internet when my computer died on the road. Nice place, decent espresso. Anyone know if they're going to keep the computers (the 'internet' part of the internet cafe)as part of the new shop?
If their cafés in Portland are any indication, they will not have computers. But they do have the coolest custom espresso machine bodies (click here for a picture)! They do have complimentary wireless connections though.

Stumptown Seattle (Capitol Hill) just opened on Monday on 12th Ave, near Seattle University and next door to Cafe Presse. I made it over yesterday, and it definitely has the signature Stumptown feel (and taste, of course). The cafe is upstairs, with the roastery downstairs. According to one of the baristas, they're hoping to start roasting at the location within a month, as well as opening up another smaller cafe on Boylston street (also in Capitol Hill) sometime soon. Definitely exciting for coffee-loving Seattleites, and the people at Victrola seemed to be welcoming of the Portland roaster.
in espresso nirvana: there is a quality coffee shop within a 5 to 10 minute walking distance from wherever you live. not talking a starbucks directly across the street from a starbucks, mind you (see lewis black re: the end of the universe), but a quality shop in every neighborhood.

In Tucson, at the corner of Swan and Sunrise, there is a Starbucks next to a Safeway Grocery store with a, you guessed it, Starbucks in it. I once heard a customer ask for a sugar-free caramel macchiatto, and when she was told that they were out of the sugar free caramel, asked if they might run next door to the 'main' store to get some, to which the PBTC replied, "We're not affiliated in any way". Very telling on both sides of the counter...
i have two "starbucks across the street from a starbucks" stories. the first is in seattle, where if you stand on one corner, you can actually see 3 starbucks all within about 200 feet of each other.
the second, i was in an airport (can't remember where) and there was a starbucks at the bottom of the escalator (just before you go through security), and then one at the top of the escalator (near the terminals). i guess this makes sense if your flight's been delayed, but here's the kicker -- the upstairs kiosk was charging 50¢ more per drink!

Well, if the place in Seattle is where I think it is, you're not far from 'Monorail'. A little hole in the wall, but the espresso is far better than Starbucks', and the kitch factor is way up there.
I remember getting a Starbucks card as a gift form a friendly little ole lady that was proctering at one of the operas I was mixing, She was old, but right on top of it, and she noticed my cap every day when we arrived, ergo the SB card as a tip. I was gracious, and stuck it in my wallet. Later, while touring another show, I was stuck in the airport in Kansas (I think) and remembered the card. I took it to the Starbucks in the airport, only to be told that they weren't really a Starbucks.
