I recently moved to DC, thanks for the ideas already posted here.  I made it out to Peregrine and was impressed--it's out of the way, but at the very least it will be a good bean source (didn't see the prices though).  Is there anything good in the Dupont Circle area?

Might head to the Counter Culture cupping on Friday, will post here if that happens.

Does anyone know when Nick Cho's new place -- Chinatown Coffee Company -- will open?

Thanks in advance.

Most recent news I've heard is that it should open by next Tuesday (July 21).  I believe that there is some detail work still to be done as well as final inspections but the machines are all working and some of the local baristas got a sneak peek last week at the monthly Thursday Night Throwdown, hosted at Chinatown Coffee for July.

Thought you all might like to know that Nick's new place is officially open.  With Peregrine and CCC both open I now have more reason to travel to DC.

I was in DC this weekend and went to Chinatown Coffee Co., 475 H Street NW, a few blocks from the Smithsonian portrait gallery and American art exhibits, every day of my trip and found it consistently very good.  Each day I got an espresso and a breve (my usual), and a pastry, and yesterday visited twice before flying back to SF.

They are serving Black Cat, and in the course of 4 visits there, the breves and pastries were all excellent, and the espressos ranged from good to excellent (flavorful and not a sour or bitter shot in the bunch) and my grade at the average cafe is D- (i.e., good to excellent is curved against Intelly itself, Barefoot, etc., not against the average cafe).  I'd call this a reliably excellent coffee if my experience is any indicator.

I've just moved from Seattle to DC, and taken on a position as coffee manager at CoCo Sala near the Smithsonian Portraiture Gallery.  We serve Caffe Pronto, which is a new roaster for me.  The shots are flavorful, with a think, heady crema.  CoCo is a chocolate lounge, using only Valrhona chocolate, which gives us baristas a chance to make stupendous mochas.

If you're in the area, and crave good coffee, please swing on by.  I work from 10 to 4 m-f, and would be happy to make you a cup you'll remember.

So this is Nick Cho's new place? I thought he got out of this business and decided to focus on roasting, with a roasterie called Wrecking Ball Coffee, no?

Found the details. Nick closed Murky Coffee and moved on as general manager at Chinatown Coffee Company which opened the middle of last year. At the same time he was working on a business called Wrecking Ball Coffee Roasters. He left Chinatown Coffee and I believe was focusing only on the roasting business. Although it will service the DC area, I'm told he's partnered with a woman in Burlington, VT and that the roasting takes place up there.

"Partnered with a woman in Burlington?" That sounds SO scandalous!!!
