For espresso, I have enjoyed:
  • 9th Street Espresso.  Several locations, but I am familiar with the one in Chelsea Market (9th Avenue, btwn 15th and 16th)
  • Cafe Grumpy (20th Street, btwn 7th Ave and 8th Ave)
  • Gimme! Espresso (Mott Street, btwn Prince St and Spring St)

I recently made a trip out there and visited both locations of Grumpy's (Chelsea and Brooklyn). The Brooklyn location was a bit out of the way, but they had the best atmosphere in my opinion. It was much more spacious than the other cafes. They also had a Clover.

I also went to 9th st. espresso at the corner of 9th and Ave C (There's one near 10th and Ave B, too). I felt their espresso was the best.

I didn't make it to Gimme!.

Cheers,
Jordan

Try Abraco on 7th street between 1st and A.  It's a great place -- and the east village is a place you should see if you're visiting the city.  On a related note, I thought I read in the paper or nymag or something that a new coffee place opened recently in the NYU area, but now I can't find any mention of it.  Has anyone heard anything about it?

The new coffee place near NYU that you are thinking of is probably Third Rail Coffee, located at 240 Sullivan Street near West 3rd Street (close to the W. 4th Street subway stop).

See details here:

and here:  http://www.thirdrailcoffee.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

All the coffee is Intelligentsia, and it seems like a really nice addition to the specialty coffee scene in NYC.   I dropped in last week and had a nicely-pulled shot of Black Cat as well as a lovely Chemex-brewed Panama.   The iced coffee is cold brewed, and as far as I know this is the only place in Manhattan that offers a Chemex-brewed cup.

Did we already miss you?

I noticed you're from Brisbane.  Are you a Campos fan?  They were just awarded a Best of Australia award.

I just stopped by Macchiato to try it out. Great vibe, great location, great music, great decor, great staff, lousy espresso. Thin, bitter, tasteless, and the grinder doser was full (not freshly ground for each shot.)
