Thanks all for the input on DC area cafes. I'm getting ready to move to DC (probably Capitol Hill) and am very happy to have a list of cafes to try out once there. One question though - how many of the cafes serving CCC/Intelly sell whole bean packs as well? I'd really like to find a local supplier of specialty beans to save on shipping. Thanks in advance for the input.

Sad news for many of us in DC. Murky Coffee on Capitol Hill has closed for good. Some unfortunate tangles; Nick graciously explains on the Murky web site. http://www.murkycoffee.com
Good news is that the shop in Clarendon, Virginia is still open and just a block from the Metro there. Same high quality and great staff. Across street from Silver Diner.
Nick needs to be acknowledged for bringing Espresso to DC with a tiny door-front shop in Georgetown years ago. He set the bar high and his shops never lost their edge. Thanks Nick and staff. Hurry back to DC.

Getting back to good DC news...
Couple of openings to be aware of in the area.
At the New York Ave metro stop, Pound Coffee opened last week and doing a very good job with their GB5/Swift setup. If you commute via the New York Ave metro, stop in for coffee. At the moment, the shop isn't very accessible by car because of all the construction around the ATF building. For most of April, their hours will probably be 6-2 but check their website for news. www.poundcoffee.com
DOWNTOWN! On G st between 14th and 15th NW, check out Bolla Coffee and Tea. Over the last two weeks (the current owners took over about a month ago), they have changed just about everything in the store from the pastries to Boar's Head deli meats to Counter Culture coffee. If you had previously written this place off (or were scared off by the Seattle's Best signs and heavy smoothie promotion), give them another chance. They are still learning, but I can't think of anybody between the White House and the Hill doing anything better.
In other news, i just moved about 6 blocks from sova and two blocks from Sidamo on H st. Am excited about good neighborhood morning coffee and sova's thriving wine bar in the evening. They have been serving for about a month now and have some really nice wines. They are hoping to add some small plates to pair with the wines very soon.

Nice suggestions, I really want to check out a few of these. I'm walking distance to Georgetown so Dolcezza Gelato will be on my agenda this week. Can anyone recommend anything in the Rosslyn/Courthouse area?
Well, I wouldn't want to presume this fits in the "Good coffee in Washington, DC?" thread, but here goes...
I am proud to announce that I have signed the lease on the space formerly occupied by murky coffee on capitol hill. For those of you that are not familiar with my history, I spent three and a half years working as a barista, shop manager and general manager for murky coffee (mostly focused on the capitol hill store) before working for Counter Culture this past 18 months. My wife and I live on Capitol Hill and are very excited to serve this community again.
We have only had the keys for a few days and have a lot of work to do, but you can follow along at www.peregrineespresso.com
If nothing else, I'm sure I'll post on here again as the opening day approaches.

I'd also like to recommend Quartermaine roasters out of Bethesda. They supply coffee to all the local Clydes restaurants and are by far my favorite cup of coffee.

I was in DC a few months back and checked out several shops. The one that I'll be going to every time I'm back in DC will be Big Bear. The staff is great, drinks and food is great, and they have a good atmosphere. 'Drip' Coffee is all press pot Counter Culture. The staff are friendly and were up for chatting about their coffee. Panini's rocked too!

Just tried Big Bear this weekend. Mightily disappointed with being given a cappuccino in a paper cup after ordering it, specifically, "for here." Tasted good, but probably would have been better in a real cup.
The cinnamon bun my son had looked really good, though! I only had two small bites, but I liked it.

In case anyone missed it, there was an article in today's Post Food section about some of the area's finest coffee bars and roasters.
Here is a link that I hope will lead to the right place.
There are a couple of companion pieces about a tasting that a bunch of us attended a couple weeks ago and a list of some area shops deemed worthy. The article is aiming at roasters and some of the new movement in the area, so a few of the old stand-bys were left out (tryst, Mishas, Mayorga, others).
