Subject: 2008 Northeast Regional Barista Competition

We are excited to announce that the Specialty Coffee Association of America has awarded Gimme! Coffee the privilege of hosting the 2008 Northeast Regional Barista Competition this April in Ithaca, NY!

See some of the best baristas on the East Coast throw it down “Iron Chef” style.
This competition is designed to showcase the barista profession and encourage community among specialty coffee enthusiasts. Competitors will showcase their speed, dexterity and passion for coffee, working to present the best of their cuisine.

  • Competitors must make 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos, & 4 signature drinks in 15 minutes!
  • Competing baristas will represent coffee shops and small roasters from all over the Northeast.
  • Prizes include a thermofilter temperature Scace device courtesy of Espresso Parts Northwest!
  • The winners of NERBC will go on to represent their region in the United States Barista Championship.

Save the date!

  • Thursday, April 10 through Saturday, April 12
  • Hosted by Gimme! Coffee
  • Ithaca, NY, Fingerlakes Wine Country
  • Held at the Historic State Theatre
  • Judges’ workshop all day Thursday
  • Rooms being held at the Hilton Garden Inn

Enjoy the wine country and our venue, a breathtaking vaudeville-era theater.
Ithaca is notorious for wineries and beautiful waterfalls. For our second annual NERBC, we’re setting up
shop in the Historic State Theatre for two days of competition and workshops in the middle of the Finger
Lakes wine country.

  • Learn from industry professionals about greens buying, roasting and brewing.
  • Stay an extra day to take a wine tour
  • Barista Party after the semi-finals: music by American Weekends. (myspace.com/americanweekends)
  • Dinner for judges sponsored by the Carriage House Café, featuring the New York Coffee Dinner Tour.
  • See the New Pornographers with Neko Case perform after the competition on Sunday night!

We’re on the lookout for competitors, judges and volunteers!
We are honored to have an impressive slate of experienced judges, including special guest judge Njáll Björgvinsson, winner of the 2004 Icelandic Barista Championship, fourth place winner at the 2004 World Barista Championship, as well as fourth place winner of the 2006 World Cupping Competition.

Compete:   Cost to compete is $50. Registration forms will be available soon on the SCAA website.
Judge:        No previous judging experience required to apply.
Volunteer:  Not ready to compete?  Volunteers are the backbone of any competition, and are always needed.

Whether you’re interested in competing, judging, volunteering or just plain attending, contact us for an Attendee Kit; you’ll learn more about Ithaca (where to stay and where to eat), the Historic State Theatre, the competition and the myriad of special events throughout the weekend.

I hope you decide to join us!  Click here for the SCAA website, and click here for Gimme!'s website - check them both for updates, and feel free to email or call me with any questions.

Cheers,

Erin McCarthy
