There is definitely such a tree. It's also known as the Coffeenut, the Coffeebean, Nickertree, Stumptree, and the French in Southern Canada named it, Chicot, meaning, dead tree because it spends most of the year without it's leaves. The pods were once used by settlers as a substitute for coffee but once coffee was available the practice was all but abandoned.
anybody else out there got any other tidbits of coffee lore out there?

Here's a pic of a nice one growing a couple miles from my house. This tree is a male; you need a female tree to get the pods and seeds in order to try the "coffee."
