Ciao:
Hey gang - my significant other has an academic conference coming up in a couple weeks in the Windy City, which leaves me a couple of days to explore the city of Chicago on my own. I was thinking of dedicating a day to a solid cafe crawl: any recommendations? We're staying right by the Lake, in the Loop (I think?)

Intelligentsia has a few shops in the downtown area depending on where you are staying, and up on the North side there's Metropolis and The Coffee Studio. If you have time and are here on the weekend, I'd suggest trying to schedule a tour of Intelligentsia's Roasting Works which includes some coffee in the price (which is very reasonable). The facility is right near United Center on the West side:

Just a note (and you probably already know this), Intelligentsia and Metropolis roast their own beans. The Coffee Studio uses Intelligentsia's beans... but it's definitely worth checking out. They have a lovely Synesso which pulled an awesome Blackcat double the last time I was there.
Most other cafes I've visited are using Intelligentsia beans as of late.
If you're willing to get on a Metra train, there's Cafe Italia in Elmwood Park, truly a bit of Italy in greater Chicago. It's the first place that I ever had a real espresso.
As to doings in Chicago, there's the Art Institute where there's always something special on display. If you have any love of "classical" music, the Chicago Symphony is still in season, and would give you the chance to hear one of the world's greatest orchestras in one of the world's greatest acoustic spaces.

I've gotta plug my homies from the south side... The new Istria in the Hyde Park Art Center (5020 S. Cornell Avenue),is a world class cafe in a world class art center. The original Istria (1520 E. 57th St. & Lake Park Avenue – under the Metra station) is great too - it is much smaller and doesn't have too many seats. They serve Intelligentsia and do a really nice job w/the coffee, the gelato is delicious too. If you are into contemporary art, the University of Chicago in Hyde Park also has a great free gallery on campus, the Rennaisssance Society. www.renaissancesociety.org
