Subject: Best UK online coffee whole-bean retailers

Hi,
I used to get really good coffee from a local shop, but I moved.
Since then, I have been trying various online retailers with very variable results and indeed prices. (stupidly) I haven't been keeping track of what was good - I now want to short-cut to getting good-value tasty coffee - for which I want to pool experience.  I understand that there are more factors than the beans; I make pretty good espresso with a Rancilio Silvia & Rocky.  Milk-based drinks are not a priority (made under duress, for guests).  Can you please post your personal experiences of various online retailers - ideally qualified with how you use that coffee.  To me, "don't try x" is informative; more useful is, "do try y".  Googling brings up results such as: Has Bean, Coffee Bean Shop, the Bean Shop, Grumpy Mule, Algerian Coffee Stores; but frankly I have no way of knowing who is worth trying.  If a sensible shortlist builds up, I will post a poll.

Thanks very much.

To kick off:
I got some Sumatra Takengon Gayon Mountains from Has Bean Coffee.  Described by them as a wonderful espresso (amongst other things).  It smelled good, but the taste was thin, as though it had been roasted a long time ago and gone stale by the time I got it.  Not overwhelmed.

I just ordered some stuff from James Gourmet Coffee- my first go so no idea what the outcome will be. I wanted some Malacara though and they were one fo the few to have it (well monmouth did but it was the weekend and they have no webstore). Though coincidentally two hours after ordering i found my local roastery have it back in... though seemingly thinner tasting than before.  Still, will report back on James once i have somw product.

Hi - there are many roasters in the UK and I have been compiling a list - so far I know of 142 of them - Click Here (thecoffeeroasters.co.uk)

Sorry it probably doesn't help!!

I had exactly your problem of trying to find good roasters through Google. I also found it frustrating that you had to register each time you went to a new site.

I make espresso and aeropress and have tried the roasters/coffee in the attached photo - Has Bean, Origin, Allpress, Extract, Ozone, Roundhill, Natures Roast, Rave, Dark Fluid, Square Mile, Clifton, Foundry, Artisan, Terrone, Ethical Addictions, Caravan, Horsham, Dear Green, Bullet, Roasterb, Bean Shot and a few in NZ, Paris & Norway.

Regarding a short list I can recommend - Artisan, Clifton, Foundry, Dear Green, Horsham, Roasterb, Bean Shot - although I am probably biased ;-)

Hope this is of some use.

best regards
Lloyd

I don't generally buy roasted coffee but that's a handy list, good work!

What I'd really like to see is a similar list for green coffee.

Cheers

Ian

I will be putting them onto a map shortly which should make it easier to find roasters in a particular area.

Thanks.  I will look into the green bean list - it's been something I've been thinking about for a while.

I was also looking for a decent online coffee whole-bean retailer.

Did you find one in the end? - I noticed Caffè Cagliari have just launched an online store in the UK so might give that a go!

My uni use grumpy mule coffee and it might be just the way they make it but i find the taste awful...

Thanks,

CC
