I've noticed a trend recently towards increasingly larger coffee cups in takeaway venues, i find people are asking for larger cups that have previously been unpopular. Anybody else noticed this?

I've had numerous people asking for 20oz cups of coffee, a pint of coffee is a crazy amount!

Well, at least in some coffeeshops the only difference will be the amount of frothed milk.

True. I don't see the sudden desires for these huge pots of Coffee though, have we become that addicted to it as a country?!

I have to say, I'm from the UK too and I am definitely guilty of wanting large take away coffees. For me, the larger and hotter the coffee is the longer I take to enjoy it - especially on long car journeys since I drive a lot for work.

As a cousin from the other side of the pond I think this likely holds a clue. I'm certain this was what drove our binge with *$s and has lead to 'grande' mountains of milk drinks sitting on our work desks for hours into the day.  Something of a nice sense of comforting support during the rough first hours of the day.

After running the cycle once, over 20 some years, I'm finding - for myself - a return to smaller servings and higher appreciation for the short moment of personal time.

Where I live I've noticed local coffee shops embracing a bigger size of cup, for example 250ml - 350ml for a cappuccino whereas the usual English size is 200ml in common with the more Italian size. At least my ancient cappuccino cups at home are 200ml. But that isn't really all that recent. As previously stated you mostly just get more milk. But unless you go to somewhere like Costa where coffee is pretty much standardised you can ask for more coffee and less milk. Take-away is generally bigger but they tend to sacrifice quality in favour of quantity.

But I think it's all part and parcel of the way we have our coffee: In the U.K. we generally drink coffee which in other countries would be considered breakfast coffee such as Latte or Cappuccino. We haven't really gotten into Americano black or just with a dash of milk for example or indeed straight Espresso.

Hi I'm originally from England but now live in Australia.  I come back to the UK a couple of times a year and can't believe how awful the coffee served in Yorkshire is.  They really mistake quantity with quality, hence this move towards very large cups.  I've even asked for a quadruple shot of coffee in one chain!
