Subject: spit roast

Hi i'm a newby and recently aquired an espresso maker and excitedly ordered a trial bag of ground, but fresh roasted coffee.

Upon arrival i followed the instructions to the letter and warmed the machine through before adding my coffee.

I was to say the least alarmed when the machine strted spitting steam and scalding water at me and hastily turned the unit off.

To cut a long story short iconcluded after several tries that the coffee was too finely ground and contacted my supplier who to date still hasnt replied.

In the meantime the only way i have been able to produce a cup of coffee is to mix a coarser ground coffee with the espresso ground. Unfortunately i get very little crema or at least it disappears quickly.

Any suggestions

Where is the water leaking from ad at what point does this happen?
If you are looking to find help you will need to be a bit more specific.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Ok, the water/steam is spitting from around the seal. I have ensured the filter carrier is seated properly, securely and clean before attaching. and it only happens with the espresso coffee.

The spitting occurs when the water starts the pour/drip process.

Hello

have you tried it with the porta filter ( thats that handle thing ) without coffee grounds in it and see if water runs through, because if it does then the culprit is the coffee ( its too fine ) and blocks the water completly untill the pressure get too high and then it floats the handle off the seal and squirts out the water with grounds and all.
I would also guess then that this machine you have has no bypass on the pump to divert excess pressure back to the tank ( usally only one hose in the tank ) better machines have a return hose to bleed the pressure from a blocked basket back to the tank.
Solution, go and buy a tin of Lavazza coffee ( ground ) and try this again.

Also make sure the steam button is off whilst making coffee, as this could be the other reason for whats happening.

Ok, many thanks, the unit is an krups v880, which according to this site is capable of producing a decent espresso.

The water runs thru no problem, and its ok with a more course grind and a blend of the two, but that doesnt produce any sustainable crema.

Is Lavazzo a med espresso grind then?

thanks n regards
