Just arrived in Amsterdam today and will be here off and on for the next 6 months. I am looking for some places to drink espresso and buy beans.

Thanks.

Unfortunately there are not a lot of good Coffee places in Amsterdam.

I was in Amsterdam again, twice this month and tried all the places listed here except Palladium, which wasn't open when I went.

http://coffeegeek.com/forums/worldregional/europe/362806

I also tried a bunch of other places and found nothing worth writing about.

I can recommend Espressofabriek, Gosschalklaan 7, although quality varied with barista.

I only visited Brandmeesters once, but based on my experience I wouldn't go back unless purchasing equipment.
At Coffee Connection they had a nice machine but the barista was very inexperienced.
I would love to hear others experiences there, perhaps I got an off day.

Please let me know if you find any good spots!

Thanks,
Rand.

A young Woman, she seemed nice but remarked she had only just started. I got the feeling it could be a good place. I would like go back and try it again when I get the chance.

what has been your experience there? Do you work there?

I don't work there. I live in the suburbs of Amsterdam. But i come regular there for a coffee when i am in town.
Go when Dave, the owner, is working.

Another good place to drink a coffee.

A good place to drink an excellent Espresso is Café Nineteen.

Café 19
Leidsekruisstraat 19 (Near Leidseplein across Restaurante Antonio's)
1017 Amsterdam

To buy coffeebeans you should visit a Simon Levelt store.

one of my favorites cafes (probably more for ambiance than coffee) is

Die koffie salon
Utrechtsestraat 130

i had a very nice cappuccino there last week- nuanced chocolate flavors that were delicious. in the past I remember their espressos were o.k.

and agreed in general that the quality varies quite a bit depending on the barista- at least at Brandmeesters I don't mind sending the ristretto back if I find it sub-par.

I think I found my favourite Coffee in Amsterdam!

Your Coffee  - Spuistraat 60

Excellent Microfoam, chocolate flavours.
I really can't say enough about this place, they really know how to pull a shot!! and excellent friendly service.
The only drawback to some people might be the lack of table space for sitting, but there is a bench out front which gets a lot of sun in the morning. I think their focus is probably take out.
Good place to pick up a coffee on the way to the Market. Give it a try!

One thing I would like to see from Brandmeesters is a little more consistency with good velvet microfoam creation. I'm definitely more of a milk drink type person then strictly espresso.

Also, I would like revise my opinion of Coffee Connection. I have gone back since and it is quite good. My opinion from my previous post was based on one mediocre experience. On subsequent visits I have quite enjoyed the Coffee there.

"Your Coffee" is still my favourite place, though.

Thanks,
Rand.

Before I go abroad anywhere new, I normally have a quick gander online to see if I can find not only travel websites but I also find reading people's personal blogs really useful to get 'insider' info. They're especially good when you're traying to find great places to eat and drink. This blog recommends a place called Bruin Café. I actually have a friend who lives about 20 minute walk away from said café and she said its a very famous café for being super chilled out and always being full of locals. Not sure on the quality of the coffee but worth a visit nonetheless. Thats 2 recommendations what more do you need?!
I will find out its exact location when I next speak to her because I'm not sure if its near the centre where most of main sights and tourist accommodation is but I guess you could google map it from where you are?

Enjoy Holland!
