Greetings:
I will be on a tour for two weeks that goes through Hanover, Vienna and Leipzig. Are there any outstanding espresso bars in any of those cities? I am totally clueless regarding espresso there and can use ANY help.

My favorite in Hannover is called "DerMuffinMan". It´s located on Rehbockstr. 2. One or two of the baristas is/are competing in regional competitions. Good latte art. You can get organic bagels and muffins.

I recently returned from Leipzig, but didn't get to tour like I wanted. I tried a few places, and found that the thrid wave idea wasn't there. I hope that you find what I did not. There is a roaster in Leipzig, stated on my map. I found some other German-roasted beans at a chocolate store called Arko, in Madler passage, which were roasted in Hannover, but they just had no cafe, just a take-out super automatic. I found a few places that had grinders setup, but only one actually used it to make my espresso., and it was off of a travelling kiosk at a concert venue ;) You are welcome to try any of the other coffee places on my map linked from here. I gleaned some info from German coffee sites before going on my trip. I couldn't find a place that gave pride to the freshness idea that CG's admire. Good luck and I hope that your findings are better than mine! Naturlich, there is one tip I can give you, but it's because of your profession. I would suggest the Coffee Baum...but it will be for the history, and Bach references...not the coffee.

Yes, in Leipzig I am going to Kaffee Baum or Coffee Baum. I will be spending part of each of my 4 days in Leipzig at the Bach Archiv. The rest of the time I will be taking pictures and seeking out coffee. Thanks for the advice. I will DEFINITELY check out DerMuffinMan in Hanover! Thanks so much.

I have returned from a trip to Vienna, Hannover and Leipzig. I searched for really good espresso shots. What I found was exactly what has already been said here. The concept of third wave espresso making simply doesn’t seem to exist. I did find that the coffee, which was often an Americano was better than the average American drip coffee. The coffee in general was stronger and, to my taste, richer and less acidic than the average American drip coffee. But the espresso was very often from a super-automatic and which, as we know, is not bad, but never excellent. In my brief travels I did find one espresso/roastery stand that was similar in concept and setup to a high end American one. It was at the Naschmarkt (open air market) across from the Theater an der Wien, in Vienna. From appearance it seemed that I would finally get great espresso, but when the owner/barista ground and tamped I know it was a piedream. He ground carelessly, and hardly tamped with the result (in the picture below) being the usual thin blond-ish crema and bitter liquid. It does seem the norm for a small glass of room temperature water and a large packet of sugar to be served with espresso shots.
Alas, I found no good espresso. BUT, the coffee I had was generally better than most American drip. Overall, I drank a lot of Mineral water (sparkling) and a lot of coffee.

Hm....at Hannover you should have vistited the MuffinMann, the Rossi or the Menagierie...and if you were at the Naschmarkt in Vienna, why didn't you visit the Mocca Club??
In Germany Espresso is the hype, at the moment nobody cares about specialty COFFEE...
