Hello, since the Canadian dollar vs. the Euro is very good now, I hope to take my wife to Leipzig in May 2008. Has anyone advice for me as to where I may find a place to drink coffee that adhere's to the Coffee Geek mantra of "fresh roast, fresh grind"? I have been there a couple of times in the past few years, and other than the Coffee Baum (which I have not been to yet), the places I have visited use mostly automatic machines with pre-gound beans. Danke im voraus!

So, since I was given no info, and maybe in the future some travelers might need some, then I decided to provide what minuscule data I could from a tourist point of view I can. Leipzig is a center for many annual conventions, I was there for an electronic music festival, but the city has a Bach festival, since one of it's church's houses his body. The world video game exhibition is what all gamers look to between E3 events. When I was checking out there were many folks coming in for a world software conference. The city is the former home to the German Communist secret police, and the place where under the nose of this police, all of the protests and secret meetings took place to eventually topple the Berlin wall. The city also is home of possibly one of Europe's oldest existing original Coffee houses, which has been converted to a restaurant/cafe/museum combo: I found it impossible to find a place that did latte art. I did however find a local roaster, the Ganos, and a place that had large hoppers of loose/bulk roasted beans from Hanover at a coffee/wine/chocolatier called Arkos. You can all find them here on this Google map. I found several coffeeshops that ground to order, and actually used semi-auto espresso machines such as Moka Flip, but I had to ask them to grind freshly for me. The normal way is to have it sitting in the portafilter ready to go. Here efficiency outweighs freshness. The bulk of places use autos with a machine that dipped a tube into a carton of milk and frothed directly with that device. I took a visit to a department store and was aghast to see tons and tons of pressurized pf type devices or steam machines to be the popular thing. The knives and cups were naturally abundant and sadly too risky to bring on the plane. I just bought a couple of red cup and saucer pairs that I wouldn't be too sad if they broke. I found tons of antique shops with all sorts of espresso cups, but with my ignorance I left with none. No store keeper knew what an Illy cup was anyway. The Museum Coffee Baum was of some interest, with three floors of exhibits like Bach's coffee piece Music and some interesting ceramic ware, manual grinders, a Turkish room, three restaurants...none of which are veggie friendly. Funny that the best tasting latte I has was from a travelling cart-setup - a giant coffee cup- vendor at the back of a giant concert venue. They had a three group Wega, and made very fresh tasting latte. Too bad that they had to serve it in a plastic cup :( !! Maybe there are many coffeegeek type places is the city which believe in the "less than two weeks after roasting, and less than a minute after grinding" motto, but I didn't find any! Some Photos
