I'll be vacationing in Buenos Aires in March, staying in Palermo Viejo.  Does anyone have recommendations for places to get good espresso?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

In Buenos Aires I recommend Establecimiento General de Cafe (www.estcafe.com.ar). It has 4 stores, and the one located in Av. Pueyrredon 1529 is where the coffee is roasted.

If you are in Buenos Aires right now, from the 19 to the 21 you can visit the first "Campeonato Argentino de Baristas" where a competitor will be chosen to represent Argentina in the next WBC. Obviously, you shouldn`t expect too much of the competition, as specialty coffee is not developed in the country, yet (there are only a couple of Baristas in the whole city/country).

Location: Hotel Colon- Salon Mirador
Address: Carlos Pellegrini 507
11 a 20 hs.

Best regards,
Federico

PS: If by any chance you visit the competition, I might be taking part in it.

Mike,

I forget to mention that "Establecimiento General del Cafe" is located in Recoleta (10 minutes from Palermo Viejo), and his owner will be taking part of the Barista Competition, too.

Federico

Federico,

Thanks for your response -- unfortunately I left just before and didn't get a chance to visit the CG site while I was there.  It would have been great to try these places (I was often very near by)!  Oh well, next time -- and this is good info for others going to BA.

Cheers,
Mike

Federico,
Did you open the cafe yet?  I own a cafe in Canada and will be visiting BA next month.

Thanks,
Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

Unfortunately I didn`t open my cafe (yet), as I`m working in another venture (that I`ll post soon) ... but if you arrive by December 5, 6 or 7 you could taste specialty coffees from El Salvador at the Sheraton Hotel (send me an email and I send you an invitation to the event).

On the other hand, I still have some coffee blend from Lene (the Barista Champion from Denmark) that we can enjoy while talking about coffee, just send me an email when you arrive.

Best regards,
Federico

Hello:

I have seen many posts on the web with stories about how being able to enjoy a properly made or at least decent cup of espresso is a problem in many places in the world.

But alas, I'm afraid that even the city of Buenos Aires, with all it's local café traditon is no exception to this rule.

Sure, you can get coffee, many times reasonably well brewed, but a good cup of espresso is a different matter.

As an Argentine born resident I am always at odds when away from my home espresso setup as I am quite reluctant to order espresso anywhere, even at good restaurants.

I have recently come across a place (I have been working nearby for almost 8 years but it had never crossed my mind to stop there for a cup of coffee) where I was actually treated to a very well made espresso.

I don't know if it's the best of them all, but it's sure to be at the very top.

So I'll pass it on ...

The place is called 'Alsina 300' and is right on the corner of (couldn't be any other way) Alsina and Balcarce, in the Monserrat quartier and a block away from Plaza de Mayo and government house.

Here's a small map for those who travel to BA to be able to find it easily.

Best regards,

CIV

Hola CIV:
