Ooh, maybe I'll stop by tomorrow morning. I finally got a paycheque, so I'm back in business for the summer... Will report early tomorrow (unless someone else has been down there).
I work right beside their new building, and as of yesterday afternoon at 5:00pm, they still had their "Coming Soon" signs posted. I haven't asked the guys in a few weeks, as they always were projecting to open in 1-2 days each time I asked before.
Hopefully soon though... I've never tried Black Cat before....
Yup, went by this morning and it's looking really, really close, but it was closed still. No one there to bug for an early morning shot! They do have bags of coffee on the shelves though, so I would say there may be a soft opening stage for the rest of the week and then the real deal next week.
Turns out I was right, it was really close to completion. They opened up at 5 PM tonight. Well staffed shop, quite a few customers and curious passers by in Art Central. I had a traditional cappuccino which was served in a 5 oz Bodum Pavina. It was fantastic. Very creamy mouthfeel, not too hot and great balance between the espresso and milk. The two owners were a bit worried about having too many customers from the start (presumably why they opened first in the evening... avoid the morning rush and/or rushed). I'm really excited this place is a few blocks from my building. Great addition to the city scene.
I went to the surprise opening of De Ville this evening and I WAS super surprised! It was beautiful. I had no idea that they were opening tonight. Loved the classic in the Pavina as well. Who are these guys and did they design the cafe themselves? I have to know more! Anyone out there with the skinny?
This isn't about openings but is welcome news: We finally have a source for JJ Bean coffees in Calgary. Bumpy's is pulling it at the bar and selling bags. They still have 49th too.
There are some openings in the offing but news about those needs some firming up- at any rate 2009 looks to be almost as eventful as 2008 for Calgary coffeegeeks!
it's not in Calgary - but a few weeks ago, I stopped into the new cafe that Kicking Horse has opened up in their roasting facility in Invermere. I know that Kicking horse isn't everyones favourite, but I was quite impressed with their cafe - certainly the best place in the area. I had an americano and a sandwich and was pleased with both.
aside from espresso drinks, they also have siphon coffee makers set up on their bar. unfortunatley I didn't have a chance to try one. The sandwich I had was really tasty too, sliced roast beef with caramalized onions and brie. Prices were low - surprisingly so - I think my double americano was $1.25 and the sandwich about $5. Driving back to Calgary, I felt bad for all the people waiting in the Timmy's line up about 100 meters away.
