The thread is pretty old so starting a new one. Any newer shops to open up since this last conversation? Can anyone give a report on the shops listed in that thread?

Sorry to not notice this thread sooner but thought I'd chime in to say: the situation here is indeed pretty grim. I've been getting my fresh beans at Hasbeans because they do tend to be quite fresh and the price is always pretty good. I agree they roast a bit on the dark side but if you look around you can find some nice medium/ medium-dark roasts. I like their Brazilian Santos for espresso. Their drip and espresso coffees are not terribly good. Better to just get the beans and make it at home.
Black Walnut is a nice café. Their milk drinks are average at best but at least they're trying. Regular drip is fine. They get their beans from Fire Roasted. Haven't bought directly from Fire Roasted but I do get their coffee occasionally since a lot of places have started serving it. It's just fine but not spectacular.
Haven't been to East Village but will have to make a trip out there to give it a try. I don't know where their beans are from but I'll have to ask.
Next time I'm looking for a nice long bike ride I may ride out to Stratford and try Sputnik.
I was in Dundas a few weeks ago and tried Domestique Café. It was spectacularly good, almost worth doing the hour+ drive just for a coffee!
