Thanks for the visit. Sorry, I went for lunch, and just saw you leaving. On your next, please identify your self. I did not know it was you. We could have talked about roasting.
We like all customers, but specially Coffee Geeks.
Brazil cultivates many coffee varieties, inside the coffea arabica specie. We have some Bourbon, but not much. Most of it is yellow, and a little of red. The main cultivated variety is “Mundo Novo” (= new world), with red cherries. Then we also have a other varieties as Catuai, Acaia, Catucai, Icatu, and others
In my valley (Sao Sebastiao da Grama), there is a lot of Yellow Bourbon. We are in a higher elevation, with cooler temperatures, so coffee takes longer to get ripe, consequently having a more complex flavour. My grandfather did not know that it had a better flavour, he liked the Yellow Bourbon because they are earlier to get ripe, so he would always start the harvest with these.
Yellow Bourbon started to get more know from 1991 and on, when Brazil was first able to sell single origin coffees, as, before this, it was all controlled by the government, who made big lots to sell as “Brazil Santos”. (Santos is the shipping port name) People around the world started to realize we can get a slightly sweeter cup with this variety.
In quality competitions, as “Cup of Excellence” Yellow Bourbon is always present in the winning lots.

Hi,
There is one detail I forgot to mention, and it is very important.
Why don't we have a lot of Yellow Bourbon in Brazil if it has better cup ?
Because it is a very delicate plant, with thinner leaves, much more susceptible to diseases, so it does not grow well in any region, only in cooler, higher elevation places.

Thanks for the info. I just pulled another double with these beans and it's definitely one of my favorites. Does your family still grow coffee? If so, where would I be able to purchase the green beans in a small quantity?
Hi Wcmocha, I have a farm in Brazil, and we do cultivate Yellow Bourbon. I would be happy to sell you by the pound. Check on my website. There are also pictures of the farm there. We are still updating it, but it is already OK.
As curiosity, what machine did you buy ? Who was the supplier of the Yellow Bourbon ?
I guess you're in the south end of Etobicoke & I'm in the north end, I guess it was a little faster for me to hop on to the 401 West that's really close to me, than for you Doug.
Would Kipling Subway be ok for you about 6pm?
Ok, I was wondering how you were going to do this. {;-)
It'll take me approximately 20 minutes to get to the Kipling Subway from my location, but I'll factor in additional lead time. Thank you Doug! {:-D
