hi, i am running a small fair trade non profit café in toronto (at u of t) and we're looking to order organic milk. currently i am running between classes to pick up milk from kensington.
two questions:
i) does anyone have a supplier, who delivers for a resonable price-- the only delivry option i found would charge over 4 dollars a bottle, a little ridiculous?
ii) harmony vs. hewettes (or perhaps another option)?

Sounds like a nice cafe. IMO, organic milk tastes more creamy than regular.

My favorite brand is the Amish Farm one, followed by Stony field and then Organic Valley.

Whatever you do, don't bother with organic meadow or the pc organics milk.  Neither steams well to hold nice microfoam.  Harmony is excellent and is really nice for steaming.  Hewitts is what we use at home, however it is not organic, BUT I'm pretty sure that is processed at the same facility as Harmony.  I've heard that it comes from smaller farms that are less likely to have a hormone/drug regime.  The Common on College (near Dufferin) uses Hewitts.  You can even get glass bottles to be reused.

thanks for your responses. we have been using harmony, and i think hewettes would be fine as well (they use it at ideal coffee, and their latte's a pry darn good).

today my canvas bag got caught in the spokes of my bike and threw me off. milk everywhere; thus, major desire for milk delivery.

so i must stress my original  question: does anyone know good cheap organic milk suppliers who can deliver ideally without a minimum ordering quantity and a fairly reasonable tariff.

Caroline

We buy Harmony from Hewitts - the Hewitts milk is not organic as far as I know. Hewitts delivers to us and a number of our wholesale coffee customers and the minimums are not too high - how much a week are you spending on milk?

You should give Hewitts a call - you could order every two weeks - you'll save a huge amnt of time. You can also get Harmony from Pro-Organics - you may want to call them too.

cheers

David

I would have to disagree with the assertion that Organic Meadow does not steam well or hold microfoam. We use Harmony and Organic Meadow in our Espresso Bar and both work quite well. Harmony does have a small edge in consistency in the microfoam and a very, very slightly better taste but both are so much better than regular milk that we are happy with either.

Welcome to the Coffeegeek forums Geoffrey! {:-D

I saw Harmony for sure being used at the Canadian Coffee & Tea Show that was held at the Toronto Congress Centre where the   Canadian National Barista Championship was held on Sun Sept 17 & Mon Sept 18th, that should tell ya something!

Hi Craig
Thanks for the welcome.
I do agree with the fact that Harmony is better ... definitely.
Harmony is not as easily available here in Halifax though ... and is slightly more expensive.
Organic Meadow is still very nice.

I tried Organic Meadow more than a few times a year or more ago, as did a couple of shop owners that I know, and we didn't have any luck.  It is possible that the Organic Meadow on the East Coast comes from a completely different processing facility and behaves completely differently.  I read a recent Barista Magazine article that talked about two different kinds of pasturization that is done to milk.  The higher temperature process can interfere with the ability of milk to hold its structure when being steamed.  I have no idea if the milk I tried was processed in this fashion but it is a possibility.  I also read a post here ages ago about the fact that the diet of the cows could have an effect on the ability of milk to hold microfoam.  I'll give it a shot again to see if anything is changed.
Cheers,
Kaelin
