Went to JF Leduc's Caffè in Gamba, tonight. I'm now convinced that JF really loves coffee. Yes, they sell Intelligentsia coffee. In fact, they sell all their coffees from silos so you can get just the right quantity of any blend you want. Nice! I just like diversity too much to buy a pound at a time of good coffee beans. I don't want them to go stale before the bag is done. JF was saying that he prefers to serve espresso with the Kid'O blend but he was using Black Cat tonight. The Black Cat ristretto I had tonight was better than what Anthony poured at Veritas during the Espresso Jam not too long ago (I was a bit disappointed with BC that night but quite pleased with Kid'O). This was a nice shot. A round yet complex flavour. No rough edges but plenty of flavour. Well-balanced yet assertive. I still preferred the Kid'O at the Espresso Jam, but this shot was a good representation of West Coast espresso as it should be. (Yes, I know, Intelly's from Chicago. But their coffees, to me, are still West Coast style...) What's even more interesting is that, at Gamba, they also pour shots from a blend they get directly from Italy. Can't remember the name off the top of my head but it's a great representation of Northern Italian espresso. No harshness associated with Southern Italian espressos. But something quite different from West Coast espresso. I dare say more "rustic." IOW, the anti-Starbucks! ;-) I quite like JF's attitude. He's not into hype or world domination. He seems to genuinely care about coffee experience. Very fitting for Montreal. With Veritas, Gamba can be part of important changes in Montreal's coffee culture. We needed this.

I had a very nice Black Cat espresso, an excellent macchiato, and an engaging chat with JF today. I agree with everything Alexendre said, the cafe looks and feels great, it's not hard to feel at home there. Great location too, I imagine it won't be long before I have to fight for my standing room at the bar.

Hi guys, First of, thank you so much for passing by. It was refreshing having you standing at the bar rather then at the virtual CG forum ;-) Alex, thanks for the generous talk on Monday. I look forward to chat with you again, you're really passionate about coffee so it's accordingly pleasant to serve someone who appreciate espresso. I think it's thrilling that you actually roast your own blends and, sometimes, I'd love if you could bring your popper at the store. I have a small stove at the store on which we could experiment. Anthony, gee I got nervous when you showed up today :-) Luckily, my shots were O.K. ... but I nearly killed your girlfriend with the sea-foam latte :-) I thought she was extremely polite finishing it !!! N.B.: What a coincidence that we both worked in a Cafe Creme before ... ! N.B.B.: Thinking over it, I'll give you one of my essay only in exchange of one of yours ;-) Sylvain, tell me how the BC came out at home. JP, I've re-priced the Intelligentsia ! I did the calculation today from "Kilo to pounds" and realized it was ridiculously expensive ! You should have complained to the "Office de la Protection des Consommateurs" ;-) Now it makes more sense. By the way, my staff love your tamper and I'm ordering one for them (as well as one RB Rosewood as a treat for myself :-P) Speaking tamper, what is your personal favorite base ? I have a crush for the C-Flat, which I was using not long ago. Anyone else has an opinion ? See you soon, JF

Speaking tamper, what is your personal favorite base ? I have a crush for the C-Flat, which I was using not long ago. Anyone else has an opinion ? C flat is sweet but i suppose it depends on your basket shape ... if its flat go flat if its curved go curved so you put the same pressure everywhere... cheers Jason
