Hello fellow coffeegeeks in the Asia Region,

I'm currently based in the SF Bay Area, but originally from Malaysia. It's been interesting to see how much coffee interest has grown in Singapore, Malaysia, and perhaps other ASEAN countries. However, how many of you buy whole beans, and then grind and brew from scratch either at home or in the office? Or is all the action at the third wave coffeeshops?

I definitely buy beans and grind them at home before making coffee. I think you'll find most people on here do -- with lots of people going the extra step and even roasting their own beans!

Coffee, and the atmosphere, at most third-wave coffee shops is usually great, but a big part of the fun of coffee is the process involved. It's also considerably cheaper to do it at home. :)

CraftyDeer,

Yes, except you're in Montreal. I was curious about the state of home brew/espresso in the Asia region.

Come on people, don't be shy. Give a shout out if you brew or pull shots from home or office.

I get whole beans and grind brew at home and at the office.

I can get freshly roasted stuff in singapore so its not too bad. Just that most of these 3rd wave coffee places close when I finish work. Tad hard to get beans then.

What sort of brewing do you do? Also, do the roasters date the day of roast? What coffees do you like?
I'll probably be visiting Singapore sometime next year, and it would be great to be able to hit all the coffee places.
Thanks for posting Zenesh. Any others? Do chime in.

I think most people on this webboard are enthusiasts so they do whatever aficionado will do.  I don't think one that is here regularly drink folger or the like even in SEAsia.  For me, I asked who roasted coffee at home in SEAsia and I think it makes more sense... My 2 cents

After asking a third party (wife) to read to the thread to see if I missed anything, it was mentioned that perhaps I didn't make it clear what I was asking. So, let me start this again. Before that I should mention that it is just an effort to touch base with home brewers in Singapore, Malaysia, and SEA, for the sake of camaraderie. Yes, I'm in SF, but Malaysian, as mentioned.
So, here are the questions!

- How many people buy whole beans, for grinding/brewing at home or office? Is having your coffees at cafes more popular?
- Of those who brew their own, who roasts their own?
- Why roast? In the US, the percent buying roasted beans is much higher than home roasters. Is it the other way round in Sg or SEA? Why?
- Where do you get your beans from?

Thanks!

Cheers,

Hi there kopidrinker just to revive this post. Give me a buzz if you do come to Singapore. Always on the lookout for a kopi buddy.

- How many people buy whole beans, for grinding/brewing at home or office? Is having your coffees at cafes more popular?
Yes I buy whole beans and do the grinding myself at home and at the office. Due to cost and not having good cafes walking distance from my office its mainly brew my own.

- Of those who brew their own, who roasts their own?
I used to roast my own and still do on and off. But quite a few roasters in singapore now so no real need to roast unless I have a specific variant that I want that is not sold at stores.

- Why roast? In the US, the percent buying roasted beans is much higher than home roasters. Is it the other way round in Sg or SEA? Why?
Don't know of that many home roasters. Most think I am abit nuts to do it myself.

- Where do you get your beans from?
A combination of Highlanders Coffee, Toby's Estate and Smitten. Sometime Oreole
