Andy, the 07 rules state that there's 5 points awarded for finishing within the last few seconds of the alloted 8 minutes. In the 08 rules it is only 1 point. If this was the only difference in the scoresheets, Erin would have been announced the winner. But it's not as simple as this. The scoresheets are so different that when you put them side by side, you cannot translate any points across....all you can simply do is: declare Habib to be winner or be fair to the competitors who have trained to the current rules and run it again.

Mistakes happen all the time in sport. For example football. Many times a point is kicked but the ump sees it as a goal. Team wins and still gets awarded the 4 points. I don't agree with the 5 point award, I actually think its stupid, but judges decision should be final. Don't make the decision several days later and say rematch. Thats doesn't work either. Which rules were handed out for the competitors? I don't care about which rules should be in place. Which rules?

I understand that, but there is rules which allow for protests to be put in writing. Which it was and was considered by the AASCA executive. They've obviously decided to re-run the event.

There were no rules posted on the AASCA website, so it was assumed it would be the current 2008 rules, which are available on the SCAE website.

There's something to be said for the decision on the day being final, but it's a pretty crappy situation all around.  On the two extremes, either you let things stand and it's cool for Habib, but sucks for him at the same time because there's a question as to whether he really ought to have won or not, or you hand it over to Erin and the same applies.  So if everyone can make it, it strikes me that this is the best way to make sure that everyone is happy with the result and that we have the best representative at this year's WLAC.  Fortunately, with so few competitors it's actually feasible, whereas it would be a royal PITA in the AFL!  It's AASCA's screw-up and, like Dave says, they're footing the bill.  So at the very least everyone gets to have a bit of fun and maybe head to St Ali after for a late luch.

Cheers,

Luca

Bearing in mind the executive was reduced to 2 members, as other executive members had a conflict of interest.

The official address for the Australian Latte Art Championships is:

Cafenatics
387 Flinders La
Melbourne

See you there!

EDIT: The address is not 369 Flinders La; it is 387 Flinders La. My apologies.
