Perth Barista Jam 2008 8 June 2008
Location: WABA, 135 Lake st, Northbridge
An event for anyone interested in sharing ideas, extractions, blends and sweet shots with the local WA Coffee Community. If you love coffee and you know it and you really wanna show it … keep Sunday the 8th of June free and come hang with us :-)
If you’ve got some exciting beans, blends, roasts or origins that you would like to share, it would be great if you could bring along your grinder and represent!
We’re working on some sweet prizes for the latte art throwdown which begins at 3pm sharp. It will be an informal 5 mins where each competitor has the chance to create one winning cup. The judging is yet to be determined, however please register if you want to compete so we can be organised!

5 minutes? Come on...that's a bit generous. The smackdown at St Ali was 1 extraction, 1 jug of milk, 1 pour. What I mean is...what happens if you have 20 people sign up....you can only do 12 competitors an hour then, unless you're running multiple stations. To be fair it should be the same machine and grinder. One shot, one pour. The pot was at $200 at $10 a competitor (20 competitors) and we knocked over the comp in an hour. Scott Callaghan vs Toshi.

Is the location "WABA, 135 Lake st, Northbridge" easy to find? I live in Adelaide but travel to WA often, probably be over there about the time of the event. Would love to check it out if it is easy to get to.

Does the whole event start at 3:00pm or just the Latte art throwdown?
I don't Barist anymore but would love to come down and try my hand to see if I can still pour =)
135 Lake Street is fairly easy to find in that its quite central (Northbridge is walking distance from the CBD). The only issue I have with it if you are driving is that its on the part of Lake Street that is only accessible from one side as where it joins Newcastle Street is "Exit Only".
If you follow the red line from Newcastle via Palmerston and Church Street you will be fine =)

Doors are open and all are welcome anytime after midday ... the latte art throwdown will start at 3 by which time the caffeine induced craze will be hopefully at it's peak ;-)
May take some advice from Dave and streamline the throwdown so that we can get everyone involved and winner takes all ... still fine tuning the details ... will post them in the next couple of days.

Hi John,
The jam went really well. We had around 10 grinders all set up and a couple of machines (a Marzocco and a Synesso) both pumping out shots all day long. There was at least 40 - 50 people through the room over the course of the afternoon and it was a really nice atmosphere of people sharing their ideas and information about coffee, and generally enjoying themselves without politics getting in the way.
There was an impromptu tradition cupping run by Ben Bicknell covering about 6 different coffees cupped in the traditional style, giving those unfamiliar with it a bit of an intro as to how to cup this way, and then it was on to the latte art smackdown.
There was a fair share of dodgy hearts and rosettas and the odd 3D blob formation, but overall the latte art smackdown was a hit, with Jackson of Tiger, Tiger taking away the prizes, kindly donated by the lovely people at Sunbeam.
Can't say enough about how well received it was... and definitely bodes well for the scene over here.
