I don't know if I'd like espresso. I usually drink the milky stuff, since the espresso I'd get from chains tend to be really bitter (are they supposed to be?).
Anyway, with all the recommendations for Highlander, I'll really have to try it one day... but they're only open weekdays 9-6, a rather tough time for a working adult [edit: they're also open saturdays; perhaps I heard the wrong thing on the phone]. I'd probably want to sign up for one of their workshops to find out more since I'm a complete newb with espresso machines, and what I've read looks pretty complicated.
I received a food promotion mailer from OCBC yesterday. What caught my eye was a picture of some cappucino art at a cafe called Geek Terminal. Looked it up online, and it seems a bit over-the-top for a cafe... but it may be a good place to check out too. They seem to have a La Pavoni manual machine (video link). Some random blogs I found 1, 2. [links removed]

Luca
First time poster above and he seems to be going to extraordinary lengths to promote this "Geek Terminal" Cafe with 2 pages of blog entries and a website link and a video. To me a genuine first time poster would just mention the name. Methinks he is connected with the cafe and doing a free advertisement.

Sorry we'll re-write the rule...

we'll call it the Kansas clause because it's different there.

A little "promotion" might do some good for the overall coffee scene here in Singapore. As a consumer, I'd definitely like to try, at least once, the coffee served in any cafe here. After all it is about the experience and finally about your personal taste that determines what's good. I'd definitely like to see more recommendations.

I wrote a little while ago about Highlander's soon-to-arrive Vibiemme Replica 2 group machine. Well, finally had a chance to pop down last week and Phil (owner of Highlander) pulled me one of the most delicious espresso shots I've had in a while. My vocabulary to describe the taste of the shot will not do it justice so I urge all you coffee lovers to go down to the cafe to try it out for yourselves. The machine is just wonderful to look at, and its steaming power is an awesome sight to behold. The poor barista already has burn marks from accidental contact with the hot group head!
And also, there's a new website up along with updated information on their courses, products etc... check em out and share your experience here!

Has anyone tried an expresso from one of the recent Singapore barista champions yet? I was wondering if it's worth trekking down to the cafes they work in to check it out since on the whole a good shot is elusive here.
