As an avid aviatior/pilot/coffee drinker I take an interest in New Zealand airport coffee.  Below is a list of my findings so far:

  1. Auckland Domestic: Take Off Espresso. Allpress beans, very good but $3.90 for a long black (but 10% discount with an airport ID).
  2. Ardmore:Aviation Cafe Atomic beans, always over-extracted, long wating times, avoid if possible!! If there's anyone from Atomic reading this please drop in to this cafe and sort them out!
  3. New Plymouth: Haven't been there since the terminal renovations but the long black was excellent. Ozone beans, and if my soucres are correct it's now run by Jim Hickey, former TV weather man and fellow pilot.
  4. Wellington: Fuel Espresso. Always good but getting a run for their money from Wishbone who do a good coffee too.
  5. Tauranga/Gisborne/Nelson: Both of these locations have an Espresso Plus coffee bar. Adequate at best. There's also one at Auckland tucked around the corner near the Qantas checkins.
  6. Rotorua: Had a nice long black from the Robert Harris cafe in the terminal.
  7. Christchurch: Adequate coffee again, can't remember the name of the joint.

That's it! Over to you!

Maroochydore - and it's very good.

As for Andy's "I wouldn't drink coffee at an airport" - maybe true in Australia but the standard over in NZ is generally much more even overall and at a high standard so Airport cafes can produce a very good coffee. It's surprising but I've had great coffees in NZ at Service Station cafes whereas I'd never consider buying coffee at a BP or Shell in Australia.

Forgot to mention at Fuel Espresso at the Wellington terminal (down by Gate 16) you can text ahead your coffee order. Great for flightcrew passing through.
