Hey ya everyone,

someone just informed me yesterday that the katrina gordon trade shows have a barista comp in the shows when they are in the various regions.
anyone know more about the format etc? i managed to get a pdf file of the brochure for it, but it doesnt actually say much.. apart from you make 8 coffees in 15 mins.. including cleanup is how i understand it. Robert Timms sponsered by the look of it.

Any one been in one? or know any more..

Cheers

Andrew

hey guys,
for anyone thats interested, i just found out some interesting info about it.. makes me laugh, and wanna withdraw my entry...

they give you 15 mins to make 2 short blacks, 2 lattes, 2 cappas, and 2 flat whites, and clean up.
on top of that, i emailed them asking for info regarding any setup times, or practice etc.. this is part of the email response i got back:)

There is a few minutes available to competitors before competing to 'play with the machines'. The grinders are set and should not be adjusted. The machines are two group semi-automatic and are easy to use. I show each competitor the functions prior to use. The machines have been fully programmed before use.

i have emailed and said i find changing the grind etc essential to creating great espresso based drinks.. so will be interesting to see what reply i get back...

Who supplies the coffee?

Why not toss a spanner in the works and ask if you can bring your own grinder!

Hiya John

Robert Timms supply the coffee and sponser the event.. doesnt sound like i can take my own grinder..
after questioning the 'not adjusting grinder thing' heres the response i got:

Andrew, the reason that I ask not to adjust the grind is that some competitors do have want to or know how to, but I understand what you say.

If you do adjust the grind please notify the judges prior to your start to ensure they check after your use.

i'm gonna enter it for a hoot, but hey not too worried about it! :)

Andrew

Go for it and have some fun!

Maybe bring a bag of your own beans along, just in case.

You did not mention what the prize is. Let us know how it goes.

Well the comp was today..

interesting...

no way near as polished and strictly run as the Robert H run comps.

still, good to meet up with a few local coffee dudes and dudettes...

Hi Andy,

I won that comp down here last year. To be far it was pretty low key (almost to the point of being no key), but it was fun. Don't go in expecting extractions timed or anything overly fancy like that. The coffees were made in takeaway cups etc etc. More just a chance for a few of the competition regulars just to meet up before the bigger comps come online in the next few months.

In my opinion, the more times you compete, the more people you meet, the more you learn, the better you get.

Off the USBC tomorrow. Will keep you posted. All the "RockStars" are competing.

Later
Carl

Hi John,

really wanted to come over and support you guys, but with USBC this week and out of town competitions the previous 2 weeks, I thought it best that I do some real work.

You going state side?
