Subject: HIRING: Blue Bottle Cafe Manager (WC Morse - Oakland)

Blue Bottle Coffee is looking for an enthusiastic, passionate, and driven Manager for our soon to be opened caf้ at the historic W.C. Morse Building in Oakland’s Temescal District (42nd and Broadway, to be specific).

Here are a few helpful facts about the caf้, the area, and our intentions with the space:

Morse will indeed be the largest Blue Bottle Caf้ to date, with more square footage than all of our other California stores combined. It has 20-foot ceilings, enormous windows and a splendid tile floor, which remains intact from its construction in 1905. In keeping with the building’s history as an auto showroom, we will be repairing home espresso machines there and housing our tech department.

In addition, we will be curating a food menu somewhat akin to our Mint Plaza Caf้ and featuring items that will pair well with our coffees.

Direct Supervisor: Head Retail Manager - California
Direct Reports: Morse Lead Barista and Baristi
Collaborates with: Production Manager, Roasting Coordinator, Inventory
Coordinator, Training Department, Finance, Kitchen Manager, Human Resources and Retail Managers

This is an exempt position

Weekly Schedule: An average of 40 hours weekly should include administrative time to accomplish administrative tasks. Flexibility is essential during busy seasons or when normal workflow is interrupted by unforeseen events.


We are looking for a leader for our new caf้ in Oakland, located in a historic building on Broadway. In order to fulfill the expectations of this role we are seeking someone who enjoys working in a busy location, can problem solve in the moment, be flexible and adaptable and works well with a large team. In addition, we are looking for someone to lead by example by treating our customers and staff with respect and understanding, displaying confidence while producing quality coffee drinks (espresso, iced, and drip) and providing outstanding customer service at all times. The Morse manager must be an innovative and collaborative leader who can motivate, discipline, direct, support and encourage their team.

Execution and Job Knowledge
Blue Bottle’s performance expectations for the Morse manager are:

• Having impeccable customer service skills.

• Able to lead by example at all times

• Being extremely punctual, tidy and clean in appearance (adhering to the Blue Bottle dress code at all times)

• Meeting weekly with Management Team, Lead Barista and other key staff members to discuss menus, troubleshoot and discuss issues.

• Collaborating with the Kitchen Manager, Production Manager and Inventory Coordinator on systems that will ensure that deliveries are complete and on time.

• Collaborating with the Tech Department

• Developing a plan with the Director of Operations and West Coast Head Retail Manager to achieve monthly/quarterly goals set by CEO & CFO

• Collaborating with Inventory Coordinator and Head Retail Manager regarding retail merchandise and supply inventories

• Recruiting, coaching and reprimanding staff members as needed; working with Human Resources

• Conducting all performance evaluations and ensuring they are being done in a timely manner

• Attending all BBCC manager meetings and leading store meetings quarterly

• Providing coaching and product knowledge to retail staff, reinforced by Lead Barista

• Developing and maintaining the work schedule that is efficient and cost effective, and approving any time-off requests

• Monitoring and planning for special events, holidays, seasonal breaks, etc.

• Managing payroll for your entire staff in a timely manner

• Placing orders for all of the Morse caf้ needs – menu ingredients, pastries, paper supplies, milk, merchandise, etc.

• Acting as a representative of Blue Bottle at all times.

Job Requirements
Education and/or Experience:

• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

• ServSafe Certification (or have test scheduled upon being hired)

• Completed 90 days at Blue Bottle Coffee

• Completed barista training and has competent barista skills

• Able to use online tools including Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Docs and Apps as well as other online organizational tools

• Basic math and computer skills


• 1 year of food retail management experience

• 2 plus years of retail coffee experience or the equivalent

Language Skills:

Ability to read and speak English proficiently

• Fine hand manipulation (working the espresso machine)

• Frequent tasting and smelling of products
