Okay, I was going to have a nice retort on this teabagger dilemma, but suffice it to say that my dad is both a teabagger, politically, and a gun nut.  He wouldn't call himself a "gun nut", but does call himself, others around him and the Tea Party "teabaggers" since that's what they started with and it turned on them.  He likes to poke at people's sensitivities, so that's his thing.  I guess that means I was raised by a TROLL!  LOL  Still I think the OP was out of line starting the thread with a poke at 98% of his state and labeling them as a welfare class, then getting upset by a label he didn't personally like.  (I'm sure no where near 98% of your state are net takers, and you don't think some of them are offended at being labeled welfare people?)

Back to the topic:
No state with a diverse population is easy to manage, just like managing the nation as a whole is difficult.  Our political system was created to have an anchor in place to slow the changes government could effect, which serves to give us stability from political whims.  It's not an easy system of government, but when people want to stop talking about the issues and talk about semantics an definitions of words everything grinds to a halt with nothing of import being discussed!  This happens alot in our California State Legislature, just as it did here today.

This State could probably handle a split in 2, but it wouldn't benefit the population at large I don't think.  Splitting it into smaller states still would likely impoverish even more rural regions.  California as a whole is a large producer state.  8th largest economy by the latest figures, but not all of the state does so well.  The cities are the ones driving economy in terms of revenue, and many rural regions are a suck on that revenue.  At the same time it's those rural regions which feed us, provide us with recreation, resources and great people out there working hard to make a living.  Together we make up a state, dysfunctional as it is.  Separate that link and we no longer have the same reasons to care about those rural regions or them about us - it will fail.

As the man who was a member of a stereotypical ethnic group known for loving to fight once asked at a riot.... Is this a private fight or can anyone join in?

For myself, speaking as someone who :

1 lives in a non incorporated county with no interest in what any of the cities that want to annex us have to offer and,
2 is of a very consertivitve leaning view and
3 goes to church and
4 ownes a firearm or three,

I would welcome the division of the state into 4 states.
They would be:

Sacramento,
greater San Francisco
Los Angeles
And everyone else.

Let the state that works prosper and let the states that are urban with over the top with social programs see what they can do on their own as they do not take into account the needs of the state that works when making laws and governing.

YMMV :P

So now you do insult me personally.

Good thing that the only person that people (like you) on this website can insult (and not be censored for, strikes against or otherwise censured) is me.

Plus, I do have quite a thick skin. I have to after running this website for a while.

For Christs sake, Mark.  You should have just made your statement about the thread not being censored and leave it at that.  Your insults against me in a public forum were not going to go unanswered.

I'm letting the matter go and hope everyone can get back to discussing the original topic of the petition for splitting California into numerous parts.

Len,

Drop it man!  Mark is doing us all a service running this forum, and thankfully his thick skin has kept it alive!  I see no where in Mark's statements that he insulted anyone at all.  Pointing out wording from your post is not an insult.

I don't know if you've had too much coffee or not enough, but you definitely could use with a little relaxation.  We're all here together as friends!  Nobody here is attacking you, insulting you or generally trying to get you!  Really, we all just want to be friends and fight about coffee, not each other!

Interesting view, Wayne. Is it just my memory of an idealism-tinged dream that remembers an ethos in this country of "help your fellows" rather than "to hell with them, let my fellows suffer, I'm keeping what I have?" If so, I think I might just go back to sleep so I can keep dreaming that dream. :-)

This position seems to advocate for a union of states where the comfortable and well-to-do live in one state, and over the border are the no-account rabble-rousers, hungry and desperate. Sounds like a recipe for civil war and revolution. Be careful what you wish for. On the other hand, the NRA and arms dealers might love it! :)

I think we should stick to discussing coffee on this site. Isn't that what it's for?

As a Canadian, I could discuss that one of our country's provinces, Quebec, could elect a party next month, whose sole purpose is to hold a referendum and secede from Canada. This would be the third attempt by sovereigntists to break up our country.

However, to dwell on this in a coffee forum is counter to its intended purpose. That is: to allow passionate coffee lovers to escape the harsh realities of the world, by way of their caffeine fueled hobby/obsession, and compare the relative merits of a titan conical burr to a flat one...or calculate the PID offset required for a CC1...or argue the optimal warmup time for a machine with a heated group.

We are like-minded in our Coffeegeek-ness. Let's not lose sight of what brought us here in the first place!

Of your firearm or three, I do hope that none are ghost guns or capable of firing faster than a six-barrel, electrically-controlled automatic minigun as outlined in SB808 by Sen. Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles. Have you purchased a 30-caliber-magazine-clip yet before they are banned? Jerry Miculek has one if you have not seen them before.

I kind of wish they would split it into 2 States, one being the Welfare portion, the other the portion of people who work. What are you guys thoughts on this?

Massachusetts is often touted as the crème de la crème of entitlements. To refrain from fueling any fires, I will merely say that the fact is that current levels of entitlements are not sustainable. While your comment was made in jest, income disparity would almost surely make such a plan fail from the get-go. A better option, I think, would be to control ridiculous spending such as a school superintendent making over $600,000 a year or the town/city of Bell whose leadership faced corruption charges due to their salaries.

I remember when I was a kid that Massachusetts was widely known in New England as "Taxachusetts".    I recall an article in our state newspaper that  mentioned only two states and D.C. as providing more welfare hand-outs than Connecticut.  Those states were Hawaii & Massachusetts.   And then we have the welfare fraud issue.  I witnessed it one day shopping in a local supermarket.  A group of people were a couple ahead of me and cashing out welfare checks from New York and Connecticut and encountering issues with the cashier.  A gentleman directly before me was getting visibly upset at the issue, referencing their fraud of getting welfare checks from 2 separate states which apparently is illegal.

It still is known as Taxachusetts - when they run out of money, they just add a new tax. They just added a really stiff tax on tobacco (I don't smoke, but still) that bumps a pack up to around $10 I think. I have a friend in social work and she said that Massachusetts allows people on entitlements (not sure if it's welfare or some housing type of aid) to move anywhere in the country and they will continue to pay it even after they leave the state (and don't pay taxes at that point). Are there people that need assistance due to unfortunate circumstances? Absolutely. Is rampant fraud overburdening a system designed to assist rather than finance? Absolutely.

Not sure how much news coverage it made outside of the state, but a while ago a Boston Globe delivery truck was hit on the highway into Boston and forced over the guardrail onto the road below. The state cop responding to assist found the suspect en route - she had three EBT (entitlement debit card) on her, mocked the cop for having to pay for his food, and then threatened him with a voodoo curse. Did I mention she was driving a Caddy?

A friend of mine has a nephew who works as armed security in the welfare office. They frequently get people come in with a wallet full of EBT cards and nothing is done about it. There's also been scandals lately about millions being paid in welfare to dead people. The banks reported it, the state did nothing to stop it.

When people were outraged at people buying pornography, getting tattoos, and other "extras" that should not be funded by the taxpayers, we were all called racists.

I long for the day I can move from this place.
